It was early morning now, I had barely slept, Jacob was asleep in his bed, I lay on his mother's bed. I had decided, he didn't need me anymore, in the morning I would go home.
My heavy heart weighed me down, my tired eyes began to droop close but snapped awake.
Jacob's mum awoke in a violent coughing fit, she clambered from the bed and stumbled into the bathroom, she spat in the sink and washed out her mouth. From the bed I could see the blood that mixed with her spit.
She spat again and coughed a while longer before returning to the bed. She sat on the edge of the mattress and placed a hand on my back.
"Pixie, Jacob's a good boy, I've raised him the best I can, but I won't be able to for much longer."
She started coughing again, after a minute she continued speaking.
"Pixie, I need a favour, when I'm gone, please, take care of my boy."
I nuzzled her leg and looked her in the eye.
I said, "I promise." All she heard was "Aruo".
It was enough, she smiled at me sadly and whispered, "Thank-you." Then she slept.
I couldn't go home, as long as Jacob needed me, I would be here. He would keep Rosie safe and though he may never know it, I will keep him safe.
