Waking up at eleven, Sam groaned at the light coming from under his curtains. His head ached. Even after throwing up, the alcohol still in his system had done enough damage.
Stumbling downstairs clutching his head, Sam noticed the note on the kitchen island. Gone out to get Paige some stuff for university. We will be back at five! Love, Mum xxx
Taking a couple of paracetamol, Sam grabbed some food for lunch, shoving it into his backpack, along with his latest book.
.............................................................................
Sam sank into his favourite seat, closing his eyes to the soft rays of light coming through the trees. He had waited all week to come back.
Opening his backpack he started eating the sandwich he made. Sam ignored the discomfort in his stomach, knowing he would feel better as soon as he ate.
Then he started on his homework, finishing it quickly in the fresh air and quiet hum of nature.
Sam loved when he could take time out from own thoughts. Even though he was working, reading or listening to music, he was able to let everything following him fall away and he could focus on just one task.
Thankfully, no one in the park today bothered him, the groundskeeper who had seen Sam come her every weekend for years only waved hello. He spotted that today, Sam wanted to be alone.
Sighing, Sam for once allowed his thoughts to drift to Liam. His view was that here, there was no judgment and at least he could keep whatever internal argument he was having, locked in his head. He started writing a short story, surprised by how easily the ideas came to him.
Sam wasn't used to showing emotion unless it was in his writing. But the way Liam looked at him made Sam feel more emotions than he had ever felt in his whole life.
Trying to wrap his head around the idea, Sam thought about his options. He had never dated anyone, let alone another boy... he didn't even know where to start with that idea. He had only ever kissed girls, something he was never really interested in. But he had always put that down to his lack of interest in the particular drunken girl in front of him. But then why was Sam starting to wonder what it felt like to kiss Liam?
Sighing, he thought about Emily's revelation and wondered if he should try out her theory and kiss someone he liked. But how was he going to get Amber to kiss him? And wasn't it weird than she had kissed Liam? Fuck it was all getting too complicated.
Sam ignored the laptop and stared at the book in his lap, noticing that the old leather of the spine held the same colour of Liam's eyes when he was thinking. Glancing away he watched a leaf tremble in the gentle breeze. As it was Autumn, his eyes fell to a brown leaf slightly tinged red in the sunlight. It reminded him of the way Liam's hair had looked that first morning they walked to school.
"Wow. This is the longest time I've seen you sit in this garden and not read anything."
Sam heard a familiar low chuckle that caused him to involuntarily shiver "what are you doing here" Sam seethed, angry that Liam had disrupted his thoughts, adding to the anger after Liam had kissed the girl he liked. He tried not to look at the other boy, knowing that he couldn't stay angry when he saw his face. "You're adding to my headache"
Liam, laughing at the obviously hung over boy, didn't back down from the tone Sam had thrown at him. "Well I called you a bunch of times... when you didn't pick up I guessed you were here"
Sam finally looked up, taking in the tired but still beautiful face that smiled down at him. "Sorry my phone was off" Sam could never hold on to his anger for long.
"I just wanted to say how sorry I am for last night. I was such an asshole, I don't know what came over me I never do this" Liam looked downcast "I swear I'll talk to Amber for you if you want! I won't say anything about your nerdyness" Liam teased trying to get a reaction out of the serious boy.
Sam gave up "Liam don't bother. I realised I never really liked Amber, just the idea of her I guess. Sorry for getting so angry at you last night"
"It's ok Sam, I still shouldn't have done it. Come on let's get coffee. I'll make it up to you"
"I don't drink coffee"
Liam looked shocked and then remembered that Sam was never going to be obvious "God you're hard to please! Let's get tea then. On me as an apology.
They bickered all the way to the nearby tea and coffee shop over who was at fault until Liam took charge, paying for their drinks, ignoring Sam, even when Sam still argued with him.
Liam pretended not to notice when the waitress wrote her number on Liam's cup while Sam glared at her.
Walking back to Sam's favourite spot, they sat down.
"So did you see Chris and Holly" Liam smirked
"Shit I forgot about that! I'm going to tease the shit out of them on Monday" Sam's eyes filled with mischief. "I can't believe they have been hiding this from us!"
"Well you've been hiding you and Emily from us all too"
Sam went pale "ahh yes well I was very drunk, Jones"
Liam hummed "Yes Carson, but that wasn't the information I was wanting to hear"
Sam thought for a moment "I really can't say anything right now... I'll talk to Emily on Monday and see if I can explain" Sam's foggy memory was starting to provide more memories of the night before. "Wait but I want to make it very clear that neither of us likes each other, definitely not" Sam was firm.
Liam didn't know what to make of the other boy at this moment and decided to just let whatever was happening play out. "Well sorry to tell you mate but Amber is a really shite kisser" Liam attempted to raise the mood
Sam let out a deep hearty laugh in response and Liam smiled "you prick"
Liam continued "rather too much tongue if you ask me and you should because..." he was cut off as Sam shoved him off the bench.
Liam's eyes narrowed and Sam saw the playful spark in his eyes. Sam was afraid.
Liam went to grab the other boy but Sam had slung his bag over his shoulder and had sprinted off. Fucking hell
Sam had a head start so it was only on the top of his road that Liam caught up. He dove for Sam, knocking the other boy onto his front lawn.
Sam was laughing and Liam was enjoying the happiness on the boy's face. Liam laughed breathing heavily and trapped Sam beneath him. Sam calmed down and settled with a satisfied smile of his face, falling into the grass. Realising he was on top of Sam he flushed and quickly got off him.
Calming his nerves at their position just before, Liam grabbed Sam's arm pulling him up. Brushing the grass from Sam's hair, Sam felt his breath hitch as Liam's fingers brushed Sam's cheek.
Coughing, Sam broke the moment, mumbling something about hearing his mum. Backing into his house after saying a hasty goodbye to Liam, Sam leant against the closed door and caught his breath.
"I see you're friends again" Paige was at the top of the stairs smirking "you seem close"
Sam felt the heat rise to his cheeks and he ran off making excuses about needing a shower. Sisters.
