The next morning they woke up to their final day in the campsite.

Liam, noticing their position, quietly retreated, unwrapping himself from Sam and crept out of the tent. He stretched and walked over to where the teacher's were making breakfast. Sam joined him a couple of minutes later having woken up to the cold. They ate in silence before the teacher broke it "ok so you guys know it's your last day so you're free to do whatever you like. You can go to the lake or go for a walk but there is also a trip into town we are offering if you need to buy anything"

Holly, Chris, Emily and some others decided to go into town, whilst other groups decided to go to the lake.

Sam was hoping to be able to just go for a walk in the nearby forest, not really wanting to deal with loud groups today. He smiled as Liam opted to join him as they had to be in groups of at least two.

They grabbed some snacks and some lunch before heading out. "So what's the plan, Sam" Liam chuckled at his rhyme.

"No plan" Sam smiled softly back "that's the way I like it"

They chatted all the way to the woods, making sure they brought their map as the woods were pretty dense.

They walked in comfort with each other, Sam trailed his hands through the leaves of the bushes denoting the entrance to the forest.

The sunlight shone through the leaves causing a dappled affect to caress both boy's faces. They stole shy glances at each other.

Suddenly Sam gasped and ran off. Liam froze in surprise and then quickly followed. "HEY! SAM!" WHERE ARE YOU GOING?"

Liam struggled to keep up with the boy who had almost disappeared into the undergrowth.

He suddenly hit a wall. Well it wasn't actually a wall, it was Sam who had stopped.

Liam groaned and stepped back "What just happened?"

"Strawberries!" Sam was giddy like a child on Christmas.

"Come again?" Liam was confused.

"Strawberries! Wild strawberries!" Sam grabbed them off the plant and handed some to Liam.

"Are you sure these are safe to eat?" Liam was skeptical.

"Just eat" Sam shoved some into his mouth and smiled at the sweet taste.

Liam put some into his mouth slowly and his eyes widened at the wonderful flavour.

Sam smiled again at his reaction and gave him some more. Liam moaned sinfully at the taste and Sam found himself staring at the other boy's mouth.

Liam stopped. Realising Sam was quiet and turned to meet his eyes.

Liam found himself taking a step towards Sam who similarly took one forward, still staring at Liam's lips. They felt like they were in a trance, wondering if they really were still in the forest and not some fairy kingdom.

Sam's eyes traced the lines of Liam's face with his fingers, seeing the delicate beauty of his features. He had never seen someone so perfect, inside and out. He brought out the best in Sam and dissuaded the worst. Leaving Sam constantly in awe of the other boy. He should stop... but he couldn't.

Liam held his breath, and in a moment of blind faith, he leaned down and captured Sam's lips with his own. Holding the shorter boy's face with his hands, he moved even closer.

Sam was lost. He was kissing a boy. No, he was kissing Liam. Sam didn't know what to do so he did the only thing his confused brain could think to do.

He shoved Liam away from him, shaking. Liam realising what he had done, turned a shade beyond white. "Oh my god Sam I'm so sorry" Liam's hands couldn't stop shaking. What had he done! He had ruined everything.

Sam couldn't look at him and instead stared down at his strawberry stained hands. He couldn't get his mind to work. He liked the feeling of Liam's lips against his, that was the truth. But Sam couldn't quite believe this thought, or more like he couldn't handle this thought.

He could scream. All those years of kissing girls and avoiding others. It made sense as to why he never felt anything. It wasn't that he liked men either, most just ended up annoying him. No. He liked Liam, more than Sam knew in this present moment. Things made sense when Liam kissed Sam just then, like when you finally find the last piece of a puzzle and it all fits together. But Sam wasn't ready to accept this about himself yet.

His head swam in confusion. Where did they go from here?

Liam wanted to run away but his feet were frozen "Look let's just go back. Forget about all this, Sam I made a mistake"

Sam followed Liam all the way back to the camp site like a ghost. All Liam wanted was for Sam to look at him. He didn't want to change what had happened, Sam needed to know his feelings. He couldn't stand another day of dancing around each other (metaphorically). He just hoped even if Sam didn't return his feelings, Sam would still be his friend after all this.

Blending back into the group of people that had come back from town, it was only Emily who had seen a change in Sam and Liam. What happened?

They spent the rest of the night as they usually did, except Sam and Liam were unusually quiet.

Sam found himself needing to go to bed early so excused himself. He needed sleep, he was starting to get a headache from himself.

He curled up in his sleeping bag but didn't sleep all night, not even after Liam entered. His head swam with too many thoughts, all muddled and disordered in his head. Time hadn't helped. He needed to talk to someone.

Both hearts were so close to each other, but neither took the steps towards each other because of fear. Fear always ends up holding back the most beautiful things.
