.............................................................................Following his nose, Sam wandered downstairs and found his mum making eggs and bacon.
"Mum? Is that you?" Sam stared at the woman pretending to be his mother.
Sam's mum narrowed her eyes at his sarcasm "You've been down here for less than a minute and you're already being rude!" She scolded. "Liam's mum came over to borrow some eggs for breakfast but I decided to make it a brunch and invite them all over"
Sam panicked, realising he was still in his pijamas with bed hair. "Shit I'll be back" but before he could run off, the doorbell rang. Groaning, Sam accepted his fate and ran to get the door.
.............................................................................
Liam stood behind his mum as the door opened to Sam's house. Why did he agree to this? Oh yeah he remembered as his stomach growled. He blamed his sister for not doing the shopping... she was at a friend's house so had gotten away with the lack of breakfast.
Liam sighed as his mum made a high pitched noise and entered the house. Glancing up at the open door he felt his eyes crinkle and his lips lift up into a smile.
Sam wasn't looking at him allowing Liam to take in the whole scene. Dressed in a T-shirt and long pijama bottoms, it was clear Sam had just woken up. Sam ran his hand through his hair, trying to smooth it down but Liam was just jealous Sam's bed hair was so... hot. Hmm maybe Liam would stop letting Sam brush his hair... it's cute all messy. Liam couldn't help himself.
Finally Sam looked up at Liam and their eyes met "you coming in or do you like standing on people's porches" Sam grumbled at the other boy as Liam stepped into the house.
"Man I'll remember not to talk to you this early in the morning" Liam chuckled.
"Yeah well at least you were able to get dressed" Sam scowled looking Liam. "I'll be right back" Sam shut the door behind Liam and ran upstairs to get changed.
Liam walked to the kitchen to help his mum and Sam's mum with setting the table. "Don't mind Sam, he is always like this in the morning" his mum rolled his eyes. She looked at Liam closely before saying "I'm glad you are friends... he has his friends at school but he never spends much time outside school with them. It's nice to see him not reading by his self all the time" she laughed.
Liam looked at her curiously "He always seems to have a lot of friends..." Liam trailed off.
"Yes well he likes to daydream a lot and read... always off in his own head" Sam's mum said thoughtfully
Liam laughed "yeah it's hard to know what he is thinking most of the time"
Sam's mum nodded in agreement "I don't know and I'm his mother"
.............................................................................
Sam rushed back downstairs to see his mother and friend in deep conversation. "You guys ok?"
Sam's mum turned to him "Sam could you help Liam's mum with the bacon?" Sam huffed at how she had ignored his question and walked over to help Liam's mum "he is a really good cook" Sam's mum whispered to Liam smiling.
Liam's eyes widened at the information. Watching the quiet boy and he skillfully cooked the poached eggs, comfortable in the kitchen.
They settled at the table as Sam brought over their food. "So how's school Liam?" Sam's mum asked "I hope Sam is looking after you"
Liam felt his body slightly heat up "yeah he has been a huge help" he smiled "he is one of my best friends"
Sam blushed at the words and shoved more food into his mouth. All four happily continued eating.
"Ahh thats lovely, it makes me so happy that you boys are so close." Liam's mum joined in.
A couple of minutes later, Sam had enough of the small talk. "Yeah yeah you done Liam? We actually need to get some work done, remember the art thing" Sam dragged a nodding Liam away from his half eaten food.
"Sam! Get back here" Sam's mum shouted after them but Sam just walked up the stairs clutching Liam's arm.
Sam grabbed his bag from his room "ok I've got paper, paints and some ideas I had planned already" Sam looked around for some space to put the stuff out.
"Should we go to my house? I mean our parents are here so we shouldn't be disturbed" Liam suggested and Sam nodded.
They crept out of the house and quickly entered Liam's house. Sam had never been here before and was surprised by the bold colours of the rooms.
Liam watched Sam survey the room "after my dad left, we moved and my mum decided to completely change the style of our new house"
Sam was surprised that Liam had finally spoken about his dad. Deciding not to push him, Sam lightened the mood.
"Let's set the stuff up on your table. I have to warn you, I'm shite at painting"
Liam laughed "This isn't a graded piece don't worry. Let's just make something up." Liam looked at the paper that Sam brought "We should do a Jackson Pollock style painting! Easy to do and takes no time at all"
They settled at the table and started on an A2 piece of paper. Sam poured out a few colours and the two started flicking paint, laughing.
"Wait is your sister in? Please tell me she is out I'm not sure I can handle her right now"
Liam snorted "she is out today don't worry... poor girl I can't imagine why she would like you."
Sam narrowed his eyes before a mischievous glint entered them. Liam started to panic. Sam flicked paint all over Liam's white top.
"You little shit! Get back here" Liam chased Sam around the table
Giggling Sam got hit by multiple different colours "I guess you're our canvas now" Liam laughed trapping Sam up against a wall.
Sam's eyes fluttered shut, wondering what Liam was going to do.
Sam jumped as something wet touched his lips.
He opened his eyes and saw in the mirror on the wall that Liam had painted Sam's lower lip red. Sam turned back to Liam and jumped again at how close they were.
"You really are a work of art" Liam's fingers trailed down Sam's high cheekbones, smudging the paint that was there. Sam's breath hitched as he stared into Liam's eyes that in this light looked like pools of syrup.
"LIAM!!!! WHERE IS MUM? I GOT SOME CHICKEN FOR DINNER AND I NEED HER TO HELP ME" Lily entered, slamming the front door behind her.
Sam and Liam jumped apart, Sam tried to catch his breath as Liam started cleaning up.
"Oh! Sam's here!" Lily's eyes shone before darkening "Liam why didn't you text me I could've put on some makeup"
Liam rolled his eyes "wouldn't have made a difference"
Lily glared at her brother and Sam took pity on her "he means you don't need it Lil" Sam smiled at the girl. Since Sam usually was quiet and ignored Lily, she turned a deep shade of crimson and rushed upstairs.
"What?" Sam returned Liam's gaze "I might not like her but I'm not going to be rude! I'm give her confidence so that when a good guy comes along, she goes for it" Sam knew the affect of words. "Paige used to get bullied for her weight. She had become obsessed and had slowly become anorexic. I don't want anyone to go through what my sister and my family had gone through trying to save her. It ruined both of our childhoods and aged my parents ten years."
Liam's eyes softened "you're such a nice guy, Sam. Really. You are reserved and shy but from what I see, you have the biggest heart of anyone I've ever met"
Sam flushed and looked away. Luckily Liam's mum came back from Sam's house. Making his excuses, he hurried back next door, leaving the painting to dry with Liam.
