The week following Sam's revelation and Liam's admission was gloriously boring. Nothing had changed apart from Emily's worried looks and Sam and Liam's slight awkwardness. Sam's birthday was on Friday and they knew he didn't want to do anything so they planned on making a cake instead.
To Liam, he was glad Sam was friends with him again, but he was still slightly pained by Sam's rejection.
To Sam, he was just trying to find the right moment to tell Liam. Everything would change after and Sam hated change. He worried, almost making himself sick, the unknown bared down on him. But as most people find out, there is never a right moment, you just have to do it.
Sam zoned in "... so we will all go to my house on Friday and make the cake" Emily was saying.
Sam zoned back out again uninterested in the conversation. Watching Liam from under his eyelashes, he started to crave the sweet feeling of Liam's lips on his. He wasn't going to be able to hold out for much longer.
Liam couldn't look at Sam, the quiet boy seemed to retreat further into himself and Liam was sure that they had lost their friendship forever. Liam could cry, he missed the blush he could get out of Sam, the shy glances, the glare when Liam was teasing him and the way Sam's usually stormy grey eyes cleared when he laughed.
Both boys were being stupid Emily wanted to slap them both. She huffed, unsure what to do with them.
.............................................................................
Friday came and they spent the day teasing Sam about his old age and generally embarrassing him. Sam wouldn't have it any other way. They all pitched in, buying him new books Sam wanted and some chocolate. Sam's heart was full.
When it came to the evening, they piled into Emily's house.
"SAMMY WHAT CAKE DO YOU WANT" Emily yelled from the kitchen.
Sam thought for a second, and then making eye contact with Liam, he called back "Victoria Sponge" It reminded him of when Liam called him beautiful and Sam, without knowing it, started falling for Liam.
Sam couldn't help but smile at the look Liam was giving him- it was one of hopeful happiness.
Emily started getting out a recipe and they all pitched in. The cake was soon made, Sam finishing it off with some icing sugar dusted on the top.
The group moaned as they ate the amazing cake. They were supposed to eat it after pizza but couldn't wait. They all sighed as it was finished and Sam felt so much love from his friends.
Emily, thinking quickly, dragged Holly and Chris back out of the house "ok let's go to the get the pizza guys! Chris you drive and Holly save me from Chris" they all laughed.
Soon Sam and Liam were left alone, the noise had left with the others.
Sam couldn't help but laugh "Ahh Emily" he realised her plan.
"What?" Liam replied
"Nothing" he shook his head continuing to laugh.
"Here" Liam stepped closer to Sam "you have jam on your face" they both giggled.
Sam held his breath as Liam wiped the sticky jam off his face.
"Look Sam, I'm so sorry about the forest but I'm so glad you are still my friend, you're so kind"
Sam snorted "it's not a kindness to act like a normal human being should! Being gay isn't something you have to feel sorry for"
"Yes but I kissed you when you didn't want me to"
Sam took a deep breath "who said I didn't want you to"
Liam stared, he didn't know what to make of that.
"Liam... I've been such an ass. I've been an ass to you and an ass to myself" Sam chuckled "I'm finally sick of hiding" he looked up at Liam.
Liam didn't know what to say so he just choked out "took you long enough".
They both laughed awkwardly. The heat between them increased and their closeness shocked each other.
Sam realised what he had to do to finally be happy. With immense bravery, Sam reached up and placed the hair that had fallen into Liam's face, behind his ear.
"I've been wanting to do that for so long" Sam whispered, leaving his hand to trail down Liam's face.
Liam froze completely "you know what? I've been wanting to do this too—" and Sam kissed him.
Liam was in shock, but putting aside all the thinking that had got them into this mess in the first place, he leaned in, deepening the kiss.
He was kissing Sam. Sam. Liam felt like he was in heaven. The worry he had felt all week was finally over, not only was Sam and Liam's relationship fixed, but Sam actually liked Liam back.
They stood there in each other's arms for what felt like years. Just kissing each other, passionately, as if to use the kiss to tell them how much they wanted each other.
Sam could not explain the feeling of goosebumps, electricity and sweetness that coursed through his body. He couldn't stand it, he felt like his heart was about to burst, but couldn't let go all the same.
Liam finally broke the kiss, his lungs heaving as he tried to catch his breath. Sam too was breathless but neither moved away from each other. Instead they rested their foreheads against one another's and held each other close.
Sam's eyes shone as Liam joyfully stole small kisses, moving from Sam's lips, all down his face until the nape of his neck. Sam giggled as Liam's lips tickled him, neither had felt so happy.
"How long?" Liam questioned, looking back into Sam's eyes.
Sam reddened "S-since getting back from the trip... I mean I think I've always liked you" he smiled sheepishly "but I only realised then"
Liam stared at the boy in front of him and said in mock horror "A week! I've been wanting to kiss you and you made me wait!" Sam giggled again as Liam's eyes darkened "better make up for lost time"
They kissed again, this time more tenderly and with all the unspoken words between them.
"I like you, Sam" Liam smiled and added "a lot"
Sam rolled his eyes but smiled "yeah I got that Liam" they laughed again "I like you a lot too" Sam said, pecking Liam's lips.
"God we've been stupid" Liam laughed. They both couldn't stop grinning.
"Yeah kind of" Sam's words were an understatement "for some reason I still like you though" Sam teased.
Liam groaned and his head fell onto Sam's shoulder "I'm not used to you being so cute... I could get used to this" Liam whispered.
Sam laughed "I could go back to being an asshole again if you want"
Liam backtracked "No you won't!" His eyes filled with mischief "because now I know your weakness"
Sam's eyes widened "and what is that?"
Liam smirked and whispered "strawberries" at the same time gently biting Sam's shoulder causing Sam to moan.
"You little—" Sam couldn't finish as, Liam, chuckling captured Sam's lips again for a short kiss.
"I can't stop kissing you"
"Then don't" Sam said hoarsely.
.............................................................................
Sam and Liam cleared away the table, knowing the others were coming back soon. They needed something to do with themselves that didn't involve each other.
Soon the other's returned and they continued their small party into the night, joking and eating pizza.
Sam stole small glances at Liam all night, the latter retuning them with heated eyes, telling Sam how much he wanted him.
