He was staring at me again. I could feel his eyes burning holes in the back of my head. But every time I turned around, he would still be looking at me but the intensity of his gaze would always make me cower back and look away.
"So, is she sick?" Kristi asked me.
"Huh? Who?" I asked confused.
"Scarlett," She replied.
"Oh yeah, she didn't feel well," I said partly lying.
It was true she wasn't feeling well but not in terms of health. Scar hadn't stepped outside since Sunday. It was Tuesday and I had found her just as she had been on Monday morning, tucked in bed and determined to be trapped in the house. All day yesterday she rambled on about getting attacked by a ferocious pack of wolves as soon as they smelled her step outside. I, on the other hand, wasn't too worried about it. The chances of me being attacked were slim to none. AJ was a bit skeptical. He thought I was suicidal or had a death wish. He had decided to stay within the safety of our walls for a week before determining if it was safe to even smell fresh air.
"Well, I hope she feels better," Kristi told me.
"Yeah, she will soon. I'm sure she will be good as new by tomorrow," I responded. I wasn't going to let her cower away. She was going to have to leave the house eventually so the sooner the better. Plus, she couldn't afford to miss anymore classes. She'd be behind pretty soon and then she'd have something to really worry about.
"What about you? How are you doing?" Kristi asked me. It was a fairly awkward lunch considering I wasn't really up to talking and Kristi was trying so hard to maintain a decent conversational flow.
"I'm fine, but no offense, Kristi I kind of don't want to talk right now," I told her.
"Oh, that's fine I guess," She announced, looking down at her tray.
"I don't mean to be rude or anything. It's not you at all. I'm just not up to thinking too hard. I had a rough weekend," I tried to lighten up her sullen mood.
"Okay, I understand," She looked up and smiled briefly. I sighed in frustration.
"I have to go to the library and print some stuff out. I'll see you later," Kristi announced quickly before getting up and walking away. I wanted to call after her because I had a feeling I'd upset her but instead I just watched her walk away.
"You don't seem to be having a good day," A voice startled me. I jumped slightly, putting my hand over my rapidly beating heart. I looked to my right to see Mason occupying the seat beside me.
"Jeez, you scared me and yeah, I've had better days," I responded.
"What's your next class?" He asked me.
"Uhh, English," I told him.
"I hope you don't have any tests and if you do, I hope you're good at catching up," He told me, standing up.
"What do you mean?" I asked curiously.
"Well, I know this really good diner that sells the best pies and I want to take you there," He told me matter of factly.
"I can't miss class," I said.
"You can't or you won't?" He asked.
"Isn't that the same thing?" I asked finally cracking a smile.
"I don't know, you tell me," He stated.
"You know what. Let's do it. Let's go now though, before I change my mind," I said, grinning for the first time since last Friday.
