"Happy birthday," I screamed at the top of my lungs as I pulled Scar into a tight hug.
"Thank you," She said, smiling as we pulled away.
"What are your plans?" I asked her, putting my empty glass in the sink.
"Well, I have a date tonight," Scar replied sheepishly.
"What? With who?" I asked, excitedly.
"You remember the guy from the mall. I ran into him at school and he asked me out. I told him tonight. I hope you don't mind, I forgot my birthday landed on a Friday," Scar explained.
"He goes to our school?" I asked, excitedly.
"I don't know, he seems the type to stalk," Scar half-joked.
"Anyways, no worries. You need to have fun. Plus, he was so much hotter than me," I teased her as I slipped on my leather jacket and combat boots.
"Okay thank you. We can do something tomorrow," She replied, opening the gift bag I had handed to her. Inside was a new iPhone case, a gift card to American Apparel, and a plane ticket to California so she could go visit her parents.
"Oh my god, I love them. I love you," She cried out, pulling me into another hug.
"I'm glad, even though I knew you would," I told her.
"You're the bestest friend. I love you so much," She stated happily.
"No problem, it's not everyday my girl turns 19. Now, you ready?" I asked her, grabbing the car keys.
"Oh yeah," Scar said, getting her backpack and following me out.
AJ was in the back seat, waiting. We hadn't spoken in the last two days. I was still mad at what he said and for filling me up with doubt. The guy at the field the other day was some random stranger and yet I tracked him down almost a block thinking it was our dead brother. AJ was mad that I refused to talk about it. I had Scar wake up early to come with us to drop AJ off since I refused to be alone with him.
"You look so adorable by the way," I complimented Scar, referring to her baby blue sundress and strappy sandals. Her hair was perfectly straight and held back by a headband.
"Thank you, I tried," Scar giggled as she got into the car. From the moment I started the engine to the moment AJ slammed the door shut, I said nothing.
"You guys are like children," Scar commented.
"He's the child. He refuses to drop it," I mumbled.
"Have you ever thought about it? "Scar asked me.
"I don't want to think about anything," I told her.
"That's your problem," She said.
"Excuse me?" I asked.
"Nothing," She said, refraining from commenting until we arrived at school.
"So, I'll get a ride home from Mason so you can take the car and leave early to get ready," I told Scar, handing her the keys as we walked to the front of the building.
"Okay, that's great. Thank you," She replied, smiling when a few people said happy birthday to her. She had brought the large helium balloon that read the saying in big pink bubble letters.
"I don't know why you didn't just leave that at home," I said, referring to the balloon.
"Then no one would know it's my birthday and I wouldn't get any birthday wishes," Scar responded. I shook my head, opening the door for the both of us.
