LAST CHANCE

I sat at the edge of the dock, my shoes and socks laying next to me. My feet dangle in the cool water below. The bright sun reflects across the beautiful water. 

The flowers and arc reactor long gone by now. He is long gone now. My dad is gone.

Not on vacation, I wish, not on a mission, but gone. 

As in dead. 

Tears run down my face and make small ripples in the water beneath me.

Hi Dad. Morgan and Pepper need you, I need you. We all need you... even Happy. I love you and miss you. But I'm mad... no furious! Why did you have to die! Why couldn't you be selfish for once! Why didn't you let Carol do it? Or Steve? Dad... you had a family... me, Pepper, Morgan... and you left! You just left! You should have let someone else do it, dad. Why does it always have to be you? You finally got what you always wanted. A house in the country, a daughter, a son, and a wife. Why did you have to throw that all away? 

Why does it always have to be you?

You flew up the wormhole with a nuke. 

You snapped your fingers. 

You DIED! You left all of us. Dad, I miss you. I want you to come home. I want to walk in the house and expect to see you sitting on the couch playing with Morgan. I want to make new suits with you. But I can't. Because you died.  Morgan is young, she barely even knows her dad! But she loved you. You won't be there when I get married when you become a grandpa. You won't be there to walk Morgan down the aisle and when she has kids. You won't be there with Pepper and grow old together. I love you, dad, I wish you were here. But I'm mad, I'm mad that you left us.

I heard footsteps on the creaky dock and a hand on my shoulder, Peppers. Her voice was hoarse from crying as she said something. I didn't hear what she said. But I stood up and grabbed my shoes and socks as she guided me to do. We walked back into the house quietly. 

You left me, dad. Why?

I sat down at the dock, smiling sadly. I slipped off my shoes and socks and put my feet into the cold water below.
