Smile

A man and woman strolled down the street, arm in arm. They seemed like a celebrity couple by the way they dressed and the aura that seems to glow around them. If you didn't know who they were, you'd suspect they were going to a fancy party.

The woman flipped her straightened black hair and her hand shimmered with all the jewelry on it. The man looked equally as dressed, with a black suit and blue tie to compliment her dark blue dress.

"Sana, do you suppose we didn't do a good job?"

"Robert, my love, do you understand what you are asking me? You just asked if we did a bad job." Sana unhooked her arm from his and straightened up. "We certainly didn't do the best job, but we did not do a bad job either. We did what we could with what knowledge we had. And now it's time to learn from that and do a better job."

"You're right, I'm just worried what if we never get that chance?"

"Let me tell you one thing right here, right now, Robert." She looked down her nose at him. "She will wake up and we will right things, and change for the better. If you do not believe that, then you can get out of my way because I will not stop believing that my daughter will wake up and I can apologize for the way I have treated her." Sana crosses her arms and took bigger strides.

Robert caught up to Sana and smiled at her softly. "You don't always have to be so strong, that is why you chose me. So I can be your rock when things get rough. And things are rough, just lean on me, even if it's only for a minute." Robert laced his fingers with hers.

Sana pursed her lips at him then cracked. "You still remember that promise, from years ago. I thought you forgot about it."

"I could never forget the one promise I ever made." Robert pulled her along, "now come on, Loretta awaits us."

They hurried down the sidewalk towards the big white building where many waited for their end. They hadn't taken the car preferring to reach their destination the way they used to a long time ago, where everything was more simple.

Hospital silence was a whole other kind, eerie and cold, so malicious with the way it threw the truth around. The hospital reeked of years and heaviness, and Robert and Sana dislikes it just as much as they had the last time they came.

The nurse told them to go to the third floor and to the third door on the right. Robert thanked the nurse and rushed Sana into the elevator. They were quiet all the way up, both leaning towards each other but not touching.

The third floor was more lively than the first, with families meeting loved ones and nurses chatting about their lives. Sana could even spot a few bright smiles, the kind that spoke of hope and danced with light.

But the moment they pushed open the door leading to Loretta all the lightness that came with the strangers smiles evaporated and all that was left was this dark silence.

Robert and Sana stepped carefully into the room and it took them a moment to notice the girl that was leaning against the bed, forehead resting on Loretta's hand.

"Gwen? Is that you?" The girl—Gwen—looked hot, bright green eyes now faded and puffy with red.

"Aunt Sana, uncle Robert. Hey, I just came to check up on Lolo."

"It's been a long time since we last saw you, where's your run off too. We all missed you very much you know." Sana stepped forward and drew her into a hug.

Gwen wrapped her arms around Sana and closed her eyes. "Yeah, sorry about that, I had to go away for some time, we were visiting family back in London because they're thinking of moving to Italy but there are some things happening." Gwen leaned back to look up at Sana, "I shouldn't have left, huh."
