I looked around, my eyes darting from student to student. Haylee was gone, probably off with her boyfriend somewhere, PJ was probably busy with his computer club and Lucas...? I still hated him for pushing me against the lockers and leaving a bruise those weeks ago.
But here he was.
Lucas, my former best friend who left me for the jocks, standing on the other side of the hall, looking at me. What was his expression? Hate? Pity? Anger? I couldn't tell. The girl beside me, Kyla, who was formally busy with her nose in her phone, rest her hand on my shoulder.
"He's just trying to intimidate you, Daniel." Kyla spoke, her ocean eyes guarded by heavy mascara and eyeliner looked from me to him. She tucked a chocolate colored strand of hair behind her ear and shook her head, closing the locker.
"What if he wants to finish what he started?" I asked, my voice cracking.
She slipped her phone into her bag. "You aren't a fighter, that's quite obvious. So... Duck and hide." She tapped my shoulder, sighing and shaking her head as she walked away.
I looked away briefly, to the other end of the hall where my unwanted guardian angel stood, leaning up against his locker with his arms folded across his chest as he laughed, talking to his friends.
Phil, I've never wanted your help before... But fuck.
I glanced once more at Lucas, before taking a breath and walking slowly to Phil. He stopped smiling, and looked down me.
"Can I talk to you?" I asked, looking up at him.
"Sure," he followed me away from his friends. "What's up?"
"Look... I know I've been avoiding you since you found out it was me on those videos and then the me calling you daddy part but--" I took a deep breath. "Lucas wants to fight me again.."
"Again?" He raised his eyebrows. "You mean last time..."
"Dan? Are you.. are you alright?"
Phil.
I froze, looking up at him. His eyes were on the ice pack on my shoulder. Fuck.
"Yes." Liar. "Just fell."
"You're a bad liar." He stepped forward, gently grabbing my free arm and tugging me into the nearest bathroom. He made me face him, and then backed me up against the sinks. He grabbed my hips, and lifted me up so I was sitting. Silently, he unbuttoned my shirt enough to where you could see the giant bruise forming on the back of my shoulder.
"Who did this?" He spoke quietly, looking at my bruise through the mirror.
I looked away from him, focusing on anything else other than this.
He grabbed my chin, forcing me to look at him. He looked me in the eyes, a glint I haven't seen before shown. "Who."
"Lucas," I immediately spoke.
He let go, nodding. "Get dressed. I'll see you on the bus later." Without another word, he left the bathroom.
"Last time it was a fight?"
"Sorta..." I looked away, my eyes trying to find Lucas.
Fingers grabbed my chin, and I was forced to look at Phil as he took a slow step forward. "I'll protect you, little one."
My heart leaped.
"Thank you-" I whispered, giving him a quick hug. He smiled, nodding slightly.
