Chapter 23: I Don't Know if I Can Make It on my Own

When I arrived home Chris was sitting in the kitchen. He turned to me when I opened the door and set down his cup of tea. "sit down" he ordered, gesturing to the chair in front of him. I closed the door and sat down.
It was unusual for Chris to be this serious. Generally he was either nice to me or mean to me, hardly ever serious. In all truthfulness, most of our communication is playful banter. In his eyes I could see regret and guilt, as well as sadness and worry.
"I'm going to uni" Chris stated in an intentionally strong voice. I looked at him, overly bewildered, before exclaiming, "What?" he looked away. "I've finished school and I want to go to university to further my education. Previously, as you know, I went to uni during the day as it was close to where we lived but now I'm going to have to board. And, as you know, it's a day's drive, 18ish hours to where we used to live, or two hours to the airport and 2-5 hours on a plane, so I'll be minimum 4 hours away. I don't want to leave you but I've already missed quite a bit of my uni course and now you're 16 it's legal for you to live on your own. But, I've asked the Alpha and Luna if you can stay in the pack house so they cleared a room for you and you can live in either or alternate if you feel like it. And I really don't want to leave you but I think it's time that I stop playing the parent and give you some of my responsibility. I mean I'm still not even 18! And I'm sorry if I sound harsh but you know I'll always love you, no matter what."
I couldn't believe my ears. I knew this day would come but it was still scary. I'm gonna be my own boss now. Chris and I sighed simultaneously. "When do leave?" I asked. Chris sighed again and replied "Now" and I burst into tears.

"Bye!" I screamed after Chris as he went down the escalator of no return at the airport. I waved frantically at him until there was no trace of his form. And then I realised.
I'm all alone.
Chris took Glossy to pet transfer station yesterday, where she is being driven to the same place Chris is flying too. He had to take the dog for a few reasons.
1. I am going to be staying at the pack house (yeah right!) and Glossy couldn't live there
2. Glossy is technically Chris's dog so he should keep her
3. I don't really take that good care of her because I'm always too busy to feed or walk her
Overall, I suppose it's kind of better that he took her because now I don't have to be responsible for a life. Although I do have Charlie now.
When I got home, the house felt eerily empty. When I walked into the kitchen, I wiped all the benches, cleared up and put on the dishwasher and generally put everything away. In the living room I made sure all the couches were perpendicular to each other and that the cushions were straight and evenly spaced. I did that for every room in the house and by the time it was 2 in the afternoon, the house looked like a display home. Chris's room still had most of his stuff in it but it was clean. Truthfully, mine was the only room in the house that looked vaguely lived in.
I then set to work doing my homework and catching up on the schoolwork I had missed, which was sitting on the table.
At 4 o'clock I decided it was time to try and find Charlie. I emptied food into a dog bowl and walked through the forest calling her name.
I heard a rustle behind me and she slowly crept out of the trees. I sat the bowl of food down before moving a step backward. Charlie realised this was a gesture of peace and harmlessness and she gratefully accepted.

I'm sorry it's been a while but I had my birthday and my dance exams and school has restarted and I have a headache. So yeah hasn't been the best.
