I rush into the workplace, holding a tray of coffee in my right hand. "Good morning Jill." I shout as I run past her. She let's out a laugh, "Good morning Elle!"
Jill is the old receptionist that has been here for as long as anyone knows. During the two weeks since I have come back from the DPA, she has been as sweet as possible with me. I jog to David's office, barely avoiding a spilled-coffee-disaster. David glances at me while talking to Matthew, and nods.
"In any case, I think we could get rid of the current specimens. They have been drained of ability and are no longer needed." David explains to Matthew, who taps his temple. His contacts should be recording this wretched conversation now. I sigh, grabbing the three drinks from the tray.
"Good morning Jonathon." I say, handing Matthew his drink, "And David." He takes his black coffee from my hand.
I toss the empty cardboard tray in the trashcan and walk back to the guys.
"What's on the agenda for today?" I inquire, taking a sip of my mocha.
David raises an eyebrow, thinking for a second, "I think today I'll take an assessment of our data, and begin working on a new serum. I've obtained enough data from our current group of one thousand, so I believe I will be able to create a new prototype of the reversal serum."
I cock my head, "Like, one that will eliminate Divergent abilities?"
David nods, "Precisely. If the prototype works, I should be able to develop a vapor form. Something like that, well it could wipe out divergents across the whole city!"
My eyes grow wide, "B-but don't you need some to experiment on? Aren't you developing those healing serums and truth serums?"
He laughs, "Elle, those were finished while you were taking personal days. They are complete, and we have copious amounts of blood we can use to develop more serum."
"Oh, that's great." I respond sarcastically. Luckily David is absolutely terrible at picking up social cues, so he doesn't notice.
"I'm going to go ahead and start getting stats, do you want to Join Elle?" Matthew interrupts.
"Sure, then we can all talk about disposing of the people."
David glares at me, and I shoot back, "Sorry, specimens."
"Why are they specimens?" He asks, making me recite the stupid phrase.
I sigh, "Anything that disgusting doesn't deserve to be called a human."
He shakes his head, "Elle, what has gotten into you today?"
I shrug, "I don't know, just kind of tired and bummed."
"Well get out of that slump! We are as close to the reversal serum as we have ever been before!"
I fake a smile as best I can, "You're right, it's almost over."
Of course, David has no clue what that means to me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matthew and I have developed a system for checking the patients stats. Usually I will use my telekinesis to turn off their collars and we have a short telepathic conversation with them. It has helped the kids feel better and the older ones love being able to talk to someone. The experiments on them have been far less severe as of lately, because of how close David is to his goal, so everyone has been improving.
To me, it's still terrible to see children and really anyone in cages, with drugs pumping in and out of their veins, but I am glad the conditions are somewhat improving. However, now that David wants to kill all of them, Matthew, the DPA, and I have to figure out how to get everybody out, safely and quietly.
