UTAU is considered as the sister program of Vocaloid. It shares a similar purpose to Vocaloid but the only differences are that UTAU is 100% free and you can make your own and Vocaloid costs money and the voicebanks are made professionally by companies such as Crypton Future Media. This is why there's a whole bunch more UTAU's being released rather than Vocaloids. The process is much shorter and it's made by average people like you and I. While Vocaloid releases take much longer since they're professionally made.
Well known UTAU's are those such as: Kasane Teto, Yokune Ruko and Namine Ritsu.
