{this story is set in Asgard, in the beginning of Thor: Ragnarok when Thor comes back from defeating Surtur and is about to leave to find Odin on Earth}
"I cannot believe you," Thor snarled at Loki, slamming Mjolnir on the table. "How could you let this happen?"
Loki smirked and leaned his head on his hand, resting on the side of the chair he was perched on. The dining table was littered with leftovers from the afternoon feast. Thor had arrived shortly after its conclusion, but he didn't seem to mind. He was far too furious at his brother to think of anything else.
"Let it happen?" The God of Mischief laughed. "I made it happen, brother. With the nine realms in chaos, it would be far easier to rule them, would it not?"
"You filthy pig," Thor muttered under his breath.
You stood at the door to the dining hall, watching in awe at the bantering brothers. You loathed Loki for what he did, pretending to be Odin for years, but you hated yourself too, for not being able to recognise him the entire time. Life on Asgard hadn't changed since Loki's "Odin" had become king. It had continued on, like nothing had changed. He was a good actor, you had to give him that.
"What was that?" Loki snapped, standing from his chair, the playfulness gone from his face.
"I said you are a filthy pig, Loki." He picked up his hammer and walked up to Loki, facing him nose to nose. "And believe you me, I could have said much worse."
Loki blinked, seeming deeply offended by Thor's insult. What was he expecting? You thought.
"I'm going to find Lady (Y/N). Sort out this mess, brother. At least try and make this right."
Suddenly, Loki's face broke into a snarky smile. "Oh yes, go find your cretin woman. I'm sure she'll be pleased finally to see you, brother."
He jerked back as Thor's fist crashed towards him.
"Hey!" Loki exclaimed, alarmed. "Be careful! I do not wish for any bruises to corrupt my wonderfully clean-cut face, thank you."
Thor growled, but said nothing. He readjusted Mjolnir in his hand and began walking to the door.
You hurried away from the entrance. You didn't want Thor to know you'd been eavesdropping, he was angry as it was. You held your hands behind your back and made for the back door, towards the palace garden.
You heard thumping footsteps behind you. You looked around. Thor threw you a wide smile, which you returned. You stopped, reaching out for his hand when he caught up with you. He kissed your cheek.
"Hello, my darling," he sighed. "Loki's being a pain."
You laughed and bumped into him gently. "What's new?"
He cracked a smile and you continued your walk. The archway out of the palace was etched with golden runes; it was magnificent. It opened up to a wide lawn with a marble fountain in the middle and a hedge around the outsides.
"What colour rose would you like today, my lady?" He asked, gesturing to the many rosebushes of every different colour you could imagine.
"Something romantic, strong and bright," you said. You leaned up on your tiptoes and rested your head on his shoulder, your lips at his ear. "Like you."
Picking a red rose from the closest bush, he turned to you. His hands slipped to your waist, pulling you closer to his large body. He tucked the small rose behind your ear. His expression turned troubled.
"What is it, my love?" You lay your hands on his chest, his hard, metal armour not allowing you to feel his taut muscles. Instead, it was cold, hard and unforgiving, but you knew it was there to protect him and keep him safe, which was what you wanted. You placed a hand on his neck, patiently watching him as he puzzled through his thoughts.
"I fear the future for Asgard and the nine realms," he said, looking down at you. "I fear that Loki's neglect cannot be undone or fixed."
"You cannot fix everything, Thor," you reassured him. "Remember, it's almost always the thought that counts. If you try, that's enough. But you have to look after yourself too, I can't live without you." You stroked his cheek. "Even Loki would miss you. And you know, as much of an arsehole as he acts, he is not lost to us. We have to find someone to help him see, like you did me."
You remembered how Thor had found you, years back, miserable and broken. Your family had disowned you and your friends abandoned you. You had truly lost trust in the universe, believing solely that you existed only to be punished. He'd helped you out of your dark hour, pulling you out and up into the bright light of happiness and love. You wanted to pay him back for that.
"You have to stay strong and protect yourself, my love. Or else all hope may be lost. You're our advantage. Make it count."
A tear slid down his cheek. He sniffed, bringing his hands up to cup your face.
"I don't know what I'd do without you, (Y/N)," he whispered, his cobalt eyes searching yours. "I'll try my best to fix this mess, and then Loki."
"That's the Thor I know and love." You smiled.
He leaned down and captured your lips softly. He breathed in slowly; deeply. You pressed closer to him, knowing that this may be your last embrace before he set off to find the Allfather. He was the master of tenderness, Thor. He could caress your skin with such gentleness and love, it made your heart flutter. His fingers trailed down your neck, tracing your collarbone and coming to a halt on your waist.
Suddenly, he picked you up and spun you around, his lips never leaving yours. His arms were wrapped securely around you as the breeze whipped through your hair. You held onto his neck.
He brought you down slowly, keeping you tight against him. You pulled away a few moments later, your chest heaving and his breath quick against your face. He was beaming at you.
You laughed and brushed his long, blond hair out his face. A flash of green in your peripheral vision distracted you. You turned to see Loki standing there, looking up at the sky as if pretending not to see you, his hands perched on his narrow hips.
Thor saw him too. He left a hand on the small of your back and winked at you.
"Right, let's go, Loki."
Loki's gaze snapped to him, his harsh eyes judging his brother's every move. He glanced at you, a sneer forming on his face.
"She isn't accompanying us, is she?"
Thor looked between you and him. "No."
Loki put a dramatic hand to his chest. "Thank Valhalla. Wouldn't want all that stupidity ruining my good reputation on Midgard."
You felt a pang of hurt in your chest, but didn't let it go to your head; he didn't mean it.
"I'll miss you too, Loki."
He flashed you a mischievous grin. Thor shook his head and kissed your temple.
"Goodbye, my love."
You smiled at his retreating face. "I'll see you soon!"
