A chorus of coughs echo through the grand room. We lie five feet apart, just looking at each other.

"You should sit up Will." I inform him.
"Yes I probably should but I just want to lay here with you." he smiles.

He breaks into a coughing once again.

"Ok... Sit up."
"I don't need to-"
"Sit up Newman." I order.
"Fine." he sighs.

He sits up and I get up with him. His breathing is still rapid and shallow, I can almost hear the mucus blocking his trachea.

"Breathe in... and out."
"This is stupid."
"Just do it!" I chuckle.
"Fine."

He takes a deep breath in, holds it and then breathes out. He repeats it until he begins to breathe 'normally' once more.

"See it did help." I state smugly.
"Yeah, yeah... Whatever." he brushes it off.
"You just can't stand that I'm right." you joke.

He just huffs in response. We just sit in silence for a bit, then you just burst into laughter. Although it is abruptly interrupted by the nurses.

"Good news. Some new lungs have come in! And you two are the ones on the waiting list, so you need to battle it out between yourselves as to who's gonna get it." she tells us.

She stands patiently and Will and I quickly sit up.

"You're taking it" we say simultaneously.

Will breaks into a coughing fit once again.

"You are getting worse, you need it more than me... Seriously Will. Take the lungs." I demand.
"That doesn't mean that you're getting better!" Will points out.
"I'm still better than you... He'll take it!" I announce.
"I'll tell the doctors." the nurse says before Will is able to protest.

She leaves and as soon as the door Will's face scrunches up. He curls into a ball, hugging himself.

"Will?" I ask.
"Yeah..." he mumbles.
"It's gonna be fine Will. You'll have a better pair of lungs. It will be better." I reassure him."
"It COULD get better Shannon..."
"You have to be optimistic-"
"I CAN'T BE! I haven't been able to feel optimistic about anything since the age of 5. What if I get the surgery and I end up having some side effects? What if they cut the wrong thing at the wrong angle?" he panics.
"Will... it'll be fine. I promise. I'll have something amazing for you once you get out." I grin.
"Fine... but it better be pancakes."
"Okay."

*a week later*

Will is laying in a comatose in his hospital bed, oblivious to the frantic pace that my heart is going at. I sit there at the side of his bed, feet and fingers tapping against every surface, anxiety flooding out of my veins. Fortunately, Will soon wakes up in a daze.

"S-Shannon?" he asks goofily.
"I'm here Will."

His head lulls slowly but quickly shoot back up.

"Where are my pancakes?" he whines.

I giggle at his doped up personality.

"I wanted them to be fresh so I'll go get them now"
"N-no don't leave me. Get one of the nurses to do it..." he trails off.
"Ok."

I sprint outside and ask a passer by to pick up some pancakes. I then return to the room to find Will trying to get up .

"Will lay back down." I order as I push him gently back on to the bed.
"I love you Shannon." he blurts out.
"I love you too Will but I'm almost certain that you don't mean anything you say until you've-"

I'm cut off by a pair of lips on mine. I sharply pull away and push him straight onto his bed.

"We're supposed to stay five feet apart!" I worry.
"I don't want to." Will pouts.
"Neither do I"

An awkward silence falls upon the room.

"Here's your pancakes."
"YAY!"
