Chapter 39

~ Haren ~

"Tell me, what happened tonight?"

"I'll let Nephinae give you some context first," Haren said, gesturing to the blonde and her familiar seated beside him.

"O-oh. Yes! Well, I deliver herbs from the forest to some of the shops around town every few days. Today I was just finishing with all my deliveries around 10 like usual, and I was on my way back home when this group of men in white masks grabbed me. They took my familiar, Luna, and said they'd kill her if I didn't do what they asked."

"I see."

"When she was with us, Rala noticed a weird smell," Haren continued," that's how we discovered this." He pulled the skull dagger from his bag and showed her. Since he didn't know what it was supposed to do, he'd made up a sealing spell to use on it, just to be safe.

"They gave a child something like that!" Alphonse exclaimed, making several of the people present jump," You did well to seal it. That dagger is known as a soul reaper. It drains the mana of whoever it cuts."

"I figured it was something dangerous," Haren muttered, placing the dagger on the table," Well anyway, after we found the dagger, Silver and I had Nephinae lead us to where the men in masks were so we could try and get information from them. We were going to capture them for questioning, but they all set off suicide explosion spells before we could."

"From what their leader told us, they needed the headmistress gone in order to release a seal on some magic items kept here at the academy." Silver added.

"Well then, Nephinae, was it? I'm sorry you were dragged into this. You see, the magic items I placed a seal on were destroyed a long time ago," the headmistress said," it was kept secret so those men probably didn't know they were looking for something that no longer exists."

"We'll have to ask the princess about what to do with this dagger," Haren said," how do you want to proceed?"

"Since no harm was done, and miss Nephinae was forced into this, I won't charge her with anything. I'd like her to remain at the academy for now, and I'll also send an official military search. Finding this group before they do anything else will be one of our top priorities," the headmistress said," Alphonse, can you send a message?"

"Yes ma'am. I'll do so immediately," Alphonse bowed," please excuse me."

He left and Liafina turned back to Haren," Please take miss Nephinae and visit the nurse," she said," then we'll find somewhere for her to stay. Is that alright?"

"Yes ma'am. Come on, Nephinae," Haren stood up," we'll be back."

Nephinae jumped up and followed him to the main office and out to the hall. The office for the nurse wasn't very far from the headmistress's office. They arrived after a short walk.

The office was a medium sized room with a desk at the front part and five beds for students pushed against the far wall, separated by pale blue curtains. The nurse was sitting at his desk and looked up when they walked in.

"You're here late," he chuckled," again."

"Yeah, Yeah."

He smiled and stood up," so, what can I do for you this time?" He walked over to the closest bed and moved the curtain back. Haren sat down on the bed and Nephinae followed.

"She's got a few scrapes on her legs," Haren said gesturing to the blonde," I don't think they're too bad."

"I'll be the judge of that," the nurse said, pulling up a stool. After examining both legs, he smiled," looks like you're right. They're not bad at all, but I'll still wrap them so there's less chance any of the cuts get infected while they're healing." He walked over to his desk and pulled out a white roll from one of the drawers before sitting back down on the stool.
