I wandered aimlessly, until I eventually came to a pay phone. I dug around my purse and slid in some quarters. The phone booth smelled like piss, and the glass had so much graffiti you couldn't even see through it.
I groaned as I realized some gum was stuck on the mouthpiece. I struggled to remember the home phone, but eventually I dialed it, holding the phone a safe distance from my face.
It rang a few times, and I anxiously listened.
"Hello?" Mingus answered.
"Ming I need your help please," I looked around. He asked me where I was, and I told him what I saw on the street signs. He said he would come for me. I walked to the corner and waited.
Finally I saw his familiar car, he slowed by the sidewalk, and I hopped in. His eyes widened as he took in my state.
"What the hell happened to you?" He exclaimed as he started to drive.
"I got into a fight alright? Let's pretend nothing happened alright?" I begged.
"Dads gonna notice, and when he does, he'll flip," he sighed heavily. I groaned.
"Did someone knife you or something?" Mingus asked, looking at the bruise on my face with a cut.
"Some idiot wearing rings punched me," I gingerly touched the spot. He shook his head.
When we arrived home, Mingus entered first. I came in nervously, limping from a large pain in my stomach. It made my entire body ache, I'd been so rushed I hadn't even felt it until now.
I limped into the kitchen, Norman's eyes widened and he rushed over to me.
"What the fuck happened to you?" He held my shoulders and examined me.
"I just got into a fight, okay? it's over now," I explained.
"Who did this?" He demanded, his eyes were filled with worry.
"Dad, it's fine," his eyes widened a little. My mouth hung open a little, I had never called Norman my dad. He sighed, hugging me.
"Come here, let's get you cleaned up," he kissed me on my forehead, avoiding my bruise. Mingus smiled, he had a kind smile on his face.
Him and Norman put antibacterial on my cuts and put bandages on me. Finally when I was done, I hugged them tiredly. I hadn't gotten any sleep, so I trudged up to my room.
"Your still going to school tomorrow!" Norman yelled as I went up to my bedroom. I groaned.
****
I dabbed makeup over my bruises on my face, but they still were very clear. I wiped off all my makeup. I threw away the pile of old bandages, and looked at myself. I stood looking into my mirror I was wearing a tank top and some pajama shorts from the previous night. I made sure to wake up extra early to figure out how to cover up everything.
There were bruises on my stomache, and scratches on my arm. My legs were filled with cuts and some more bruises.
Finally I slid on a sweater and some leggings. I brushed my hair, letting it fall to my shoulders. I jus hoped nobody would care too much to see my face. I glanced at my phone, which I hadn't even plugged in since yesterday, afraid of all the messages that would be on it.
Mingus drove us to school, and as I stepped out, a lot of people noticed. People whispered and I just walked, trying to keep my chin up. I saw Chandler and Hana standing with each other, Hana was giving me dirty glances, and whispering to Chandler.
Chandler just gave me a strange look, like he wanted to talk to me, but he couldn't.
I went through classes like a zombie, Mingus left to be with his friends, and Chandler was with Hana all day. I felt more lonely than ever.
The bell rang, and everyone started frantically packing up.
"I'll meet you in the parking lot babe," Hana dramatically planted a kiss on Chandler's cheek. I groaned, probably a bit to loudly, because Hana shot me a disgusted look. Chandler made sure she was gone before making his was over to me.
"Are you okay? What the hell happened?" He asked concerned.
"I just got lost and my phone died," I muttered.
"That's it?" He raised his eyebrow. I felt like everything was pent up inside me, like I needed to let everything out.
"I just got into the wrong group, I'm really sorry," I glanced into his eyes, I wanted to tell him how much I longed for him, how much I loved him. I wanted to tell him how much I wanted to kiss him right now.
Instead I just kissed him. I missed our spark, I shoved my books onto my desk, so I could run my hand through his hair. He kissed back, and wrapped his arm around my waist. I pulled back suddenly.
"Hana," he groaned.
I lowered my head, looking off sadly.
"I want you, I just need to end it with Hana," he sighed, trying to think hard.
"Chandler you're slowly killing me, I can't wait forever," I said simply. I picked up all my stuff and headed to the parking lot. I jumped back as a speeding jeep almost ran me over. The breaks squealed and I felt my breath catch in my throat as James hopped out of the car. His eyes locked on me, and he jogged over.
I tried to back away but he grabbed me by the elbow.
"We aren't over, you were so lucky to get me," he whispered harshly into my ear. The parking lot was deserted, I could see Chandler far off getting out of the classroom we were in.
"Please James, were over," I whimpered.
"We are going to be happy, and we are going to fuck like we're as happy as can be," he yanked me closer to him.
My arm hurt from his tight grip. I saw Chandler, and I yelled for him. His head whipped to my direction and he started running over.
"Who the fuck is that? Your boyfriend? Can I just say he's no better than me, and you're damn lucky because I'm the best you can do," he yanked me again, and I sobbed at the pain in my arm.
"Hey man fuck off!" Chandler yelled. James tilted his head and chuckled.
"You going to make me?" He neared his teeth.
"My babe here knows exactly about my skills in fighting. Right darling?" He grabbed my chin.
James' face was punched by Chandler. They started a full-out fist fight. James pounded Chandler, and I yelped trying to kick James and pull his arms back. He elbowed me off, but I firmly yanked him off. Chandler has blood dripping from his mouth.
James stood up, wiping his lip, as I crouched next to Chandler, I held his face in my hands, sobbing.
"Chandler?" I shook him gently.
"Chandler!" I heard a familiar squeal. Hana was trotting over to us.
His eyes blinked a few times.
James smirked, realizing he'd created an awkward situation.
"I'll come back at a better time," he sniffed, wiping some blood off his forehead. He got into his van and sped off.
