If I don't see you
You don't exist,
If I can't hear you
You can't control me,
If I can't touch you
I won't meld into your arms again
And require assistance to get back outBut I saw, I heard, and I felt
All over again
With emotions rivaling tidal waves
Crushing me into the sand
With memories of what was
Or what could've been,
Over and over
Until you were all that filled my lungs
Yet again
As it were,
Like you never receded
And I never built that dam to keep you outYou always find a way to chip away at my edges
To ease back into my life
Despite my resistance,
Despite knowing you will destroy me
And leave me scrambling
To build an invincible barrier between usAll the while you laugh because you know
I'll always leave room for you to get to meWhether I want to or not
