Dying Voices

From a young age I was told to speak in a soft voice
"You are a girl, you don't have any other choice"
Maybe "women are to be seen and not heard"is for Shakespearean stage
But sometimes I feel we never left the Elizabethan age
Whenever I wanted to shout my views out loud
I was told "girls shouldn't make that sound"
I didn't listen, and I was met with judgemental glances
And they warned me "you don't want to take any chances"
These glances would turn to hate, and hate to murder
They would shoot you, kill your voice unless you surrender
I was told history would repeat, and I would enter the mass of girls
Who thought their voices, could change the world
I knew, I was the one in a million
Until they reminded me that the world population is 7.7 billion
A world which boasts of freedom of thought and democracy
Is nothing, but bullshit hypocrisy
And before you say, I am overreacting
Look around at the voices that stood even after the shooting
Malala, Greta Thunberg,Gauri Lankesh are just to name a few
There are many dying voices, between me and you
