I woke up the next morning to find the maid from yesterday, preparing some tea on my nightstand. I yawned and she noticed I was awake.
"Good morning Veronica!" Maria chirped happily. "What do you want to do today? Tag? Hide and seek? Oh maybe you want to play dress up!"
Maria had always been a mom figure for Veronica but I wasn't exactly Veronica anymore and consequently I no longer wanted to do those things. Then again, if I suddenly said I wanted to study and not play they would clearly think something was wrong with me. I had an ideas, I could just say I wanted to play hide and seek outside but instead sneak over to the library to study about magic today. That should work! They would never expect a little girl to want to go anywhere near a library. Especially one that isn't supposed to know how to read. I could feel her eager eyes on me. For a moment I forgot that all the maids only saw me as a cute little 6 year old and some even considered me to be like their daughter of sorts, especially Maria.
"I wanna play hide and seek!" I replied trying to sound as much like Veronica as I possibly could.
"Okay! I'll go tell Susan and Annabelle." She exclaimed quite happily.

We gathered in the courtyard of the West wing where I lived. My parents wanted a boy so when I was born they neglected me and shut me out. Instead I was raised by Maria and the other maids who they left to take care of me while they lived in the East wing. For all the knew I could be dead since they hadn't seen me since I was born. I remembered a line from a kids show I used to watch about to little boys who liked to build thing in their backyard. There was one scene that really stuck with me where to villain says something about both his parents failing to show up to his birth. I remember laughing at this part since at least the mother had to be there to give birth to him but I also felt a tinge of sadness since I in a way related to him. In this life and my past life my biological parents never cared about me.
"Veronica?" Susan, one of the maids called. "Annabelle is going to be the seeker, you have 60 seconds to hide!"
"Okay!" I laughed, snapping out of my depressing thoughts.
Once everyone else had dashed off to find a hiding space I ran back into the West wing to the library. Not only had I memorized the categorize of books in the library, I had also memorized the way which was another study tip, #23 always memorize where the local libraries are and the quickest routes to them. I pushed the big brown doors open to reveal the still dusty library. That was another thing... I really needed to clean this place up. Since all the maids, which consisted of only Maria, Susan, Annabelle, and one named Hailey, who was away at the market today, were not in the West wing, it was safe to go to the storage room and grab a bucket with water and a broom and mop. I may not have a vacuum but I knew how to use a broom since my family could barley afford a vacuum until I was around 14 in my past life. After getting a broom and mop with a bucket of water, I started the cleaning process. It only took me around 30 minutes since the library was so small. I still had plenty of time to start learning about magic. So I settled down at the table with a large stack of books on everything about magic.
————————
Finally I finished all the books! That took forever! Apparently people could manifest in certain magic abilities. There was healing, super strength, animal communication, super speed, and even stealth. Sadly you had to earn these abilities somehow. Nobody actually knew the method. The only way it happens is one day you wake up and you suddenly have a tattoo that correlates to your ability. The magic people can be born with however is elemental magic. That includes water, fire, earth, and air. Most royals or high class people were born with an element. The way to unlock which element you have is by changing a magic incantation. It might not work on the first try if you are too young because your mana reserves were usually very small and could not be detected by the incantation. Magic abilities were different since they did not use mana. I decided I would try the incantation to see if it would work. It was highly unlikely it would.
"Arazaba..." I tested the words on my tongue to see how they sounded. "Arazaba livu te ouvrir!"
I waited. Nothing happened. Im not sure what I was expecting since I was just a 6 year old. I looked out he window to see the sun setting. Oh no... they are going to be so worried. I quickly shut the last book and bolted out the door. I ran down the stair case the lead to the courtyard and observed to see if anyone was there. I hid against the side of the wall as I heard panicked voices around the corned.
"Oh my goodness!" One hushed voice exclaimed. "I can't find her anywhere!"
Another was sobbing and I realized that they were the maids.
"I hope she's o-okay *sob* I'm worried sick!"
I wandered around the corner looking dazed as if I hadn't realized they were there.
"Veronica!?" Annabelle called as she rushed toward me and scooped me up in a big hug. "We were so worried! Where were you!"
I couldn't tell them I was in the library so instead I replied with, "I hid in a bush and waited so long for someone to find me! Eventually I walked around looking for you guys but couldn't find you anywhere."
Yikes. The guilt of lying straight to their faces was really bad.
"Never scare us like that ever again! We love you too much!" Susan cried.
Tears started to drop down my porcelain white cheeks. Nobody had ever said anything like that to me... in my past life even my own parents didn't care if I died or not. Now I had people who loved me. At this point we were all sitting and kneeling in a circle crying. It probably looked super satanic.
Finally Annabelle can to her senses and said, "let's all go eat some dinner, we are probably extra emotional due to the fact that none of us had lunch."
My stomach growled in reply causing everyone to laugh. We wandered into the kitchen where Hailey had already started preparing dinner.
"I see you have found her." Hailey stated with an ounce of emotion.
Hailey didn't know me all that well since she was new to taking care of me. Annabelle placed me on the ground and I waddled over to a chair to sit on while I waited for them to finish cooking dinner. When they finally finished they placed a bowl of steaming sludge. I had forgotten that this was what I was supposed to be used to instead of hamburgers and fries. Heck they probably didn't even know what either of this were. I tried to down the food without actually letting it touch my tongue and smiled.
"Thank you all for being the best family ever." I said with the biggest smile.
They all awed including Hailey. We ate and told jokes and laughed until we were all full and it was time to tuck me in.
Susan place me on my bed and kissed my fore head as she closed the door. Goodnight new family, I thought to myself.
