"Love doesn't make the world go round. Love is what makes the ride beautiful." ~ Elizabeth Barrett Browning
~~~
"Lizzie!" my mom's voice yells awaking me from such comfortable sleep. I groan and shove my pillow in my head trying to block out the annoying voice.
"Lizzie!" She yells again.
"I'm up mom" I respond with my now hoarse voice.
"Hurry up and get ready, you don't want to be late for your first day back to school."
Uggg! There's nothing that I hate more than first days back at school.
I pinch my eyes open to adjust to the light that now beams brightly from the morning's sun reflection as I crawl out of bed still half asleep. I walk lazily to the mirror when I realize the mess that my hair is in.
I'm so not ready for school.
My room is medium sized with clean white walls. It has a queen sized bed covered with my favorite pink blanket and next to it a desk with a blank blotter. On the opposite side of the room there are sliding closet doors and a thin pink carpet covers the floor.
I head to my bathroom that's connected to my room to take a shower. The metallic head that hangs above me sprinkles water unto my body, making my muscles relax. I apply soap in the palm of my hands and massage it gently over my skin. I then allow the water to run down my body which makes me feel revive. After taking my shower, I dry myself, head towards my closet and put on my washed out blue jeans with my pink top and sandals. I then pull my long blonde hair into a messy bun and apply a touch of lip gloss.
This is the norm for me and dressing, I'm not one of those girls that spends hours trying to get the perfect curls in their hair and additional hours to make sure their makeup is on point. I mean, I don't walk around looking shabby, I just don't doll myself to go to school.
I'm walking down the stairs when I'm greeted with the smell of pancake being prepared.
"You're finally ready" mom says sarcastically when I enter the kitchen. "Breakfast is on the island." she adds.
"Thanks mom." I say as I take a bite of my pancake. Pancake was my dad's favorite meal. For a moment here he is with me again. For a moment here we are sitting together eating and enjoying our pancake. For a moment we are dying in laughter from our ridiculous jokes. For a moment I feel him patting my shoulder and pulling my ear as he always do, but then the moment suddenly vanishes.
My dad died three years ago due to prostrate cancer. I still remember that last feeble squeeze that he gave me on my finger before taking his last breathe.
My mom and dad were the ideal couple, but when he became sick and died, everything changed. Now my mom only works and she never goes out to enjoy herself. She hardly smiles anymore and when she does, I can see the pain behind her smile.
"Are you done?" She asks, bringing me out of my thoughts and back to reality.
"Yes, I'm going to head to school now" I says, getting up from where I sit.
