The sound of the doorbell rings into my room. I add the final touches to my outfit for the night. I'm in some ripped white jeans and a banana yellow Honey shirt with my white vans. I put my hair half up and put on a decent amount of makeup. If I had the energy to look this good every day I'd do it, but if I'm being completely honest, I never do. This is good for my once a month outing.
"Luis is here," Estrella peeks through my door.
"I'll be out in a second," I respond while digging into my closet to find my small black purse.
"Okay, then. Oh, you look good," she compliments and leaves to the hall. That's the nicest thing she's said to me since the clinic visit. I told her I'm always there for her with any decision she makes, but I don't think she truly believed me. I don't even know if I believe myself.
"Thanks," I mutter.
I grab my phone from my bed and walk down the hall and turn left to head towards the living room. I lear Luis' laugh and my mom's loud voice coming from the kitchen. I swear they're best friends.
"Repeat the joke again, I want to laugh," I tease, walking in behind Luis.
"Oh, hey beautiful," he says and leans forward to grab my neck and kisses me on the lips. He pulls away and I smile up at him and he returns it.
"I'll be home at 7," I call out to my mom.
"Okay, m'hija. Con cuidado! Tu tambien, Luis!" Okay, sweetie, be safe! You too, Luis! Mom orders.
"Okay, ma!" Luis and I say at the same time walking out the door. I walk down the driveway and spot Luis' black Volvo in front of the house. I hop into the front seat and wait for him to start the car.
"Where are we going to eat?"
"In the mood for Italian?" He asks, starting the engine.
"Always," I smile. He winks at me and puts the car in drive and speeds away.
---
"Another salad, ma'am?" Nathan, the waiter, asks me as I put the plate on the side of the table.
"No, thank you," I say politely and he looks down at me and smiles. I look up and he looks young. Maybe around our age? Luis looks up at him and gives him the I'm the boyfriend face until he gets uncomfortable and walks away.
"You know you should stop doing that, people might think you're a monster doing that face," I joke taking a piece of garlic bread and popping it into my mouth.
"They can't take what's mine," he says reaching for my hand.
"Excuse you, but I don't belong to nobody. I just chose to be with you," I snap, playfully.
"Right," he says while looking down at his phone. I take a sip of my water and wait for him to look up. Nada.
"What's up with your sister? She seems MIA lately," he finally speaks. Well crap, I haven't mentioned the news to anyone other than Zamari. Should he know?
"Nothing really. It's just, um, she's dealing with some stuff," I say.
"Oh, yeah? Like what?" He asks, still on his phone. I'm getting frustrated.
"Okay, babe? Can you put the phone down for a few minutes?" I ask firmly. He looks up at me. Shocked that I grabbed his attention this way.
"I guess," he answers while turning his phone around.
"So, Estrella is going through some things on her own. I think you should know since she is important to me," I start.
"What? Is she knocked up?" He jokes while taking a sip of his drink. When he realizes I'm not answering him for a reason, the drink passes through him and he starts coughing.
"Are you okay?" I ask going to his side to pat his back.
"You know... that doesn't... work," he says in between coughs.
"At least I'm helping," I say, moving back to my seat. Once his throat is controlled he carries the conversations we stopped at.
"So. Estrella is pregnant. How?" He asks.
"You know the answer," I say, grabbing my bread.
"Uh, no I don't," he says, and I look up and he's giving me a look.
"Luis, drop it," I stop him before he can continue.
"Oh, please, Ana! We've been dating for 8 months now, shouldn't we have done it by now? I mean look at your younger sister getting some action!" He whispers yells.
"Well I mean look at her now! Pregnant!" I follow the same tone.
"I'm just saying it's kind of ridiculous that we've been dating for almost a year and we still haven't done anything," I turn to look at him in disgust.
"I started this conversation to talk about what's going on at my house and how Estrella is struggling to keep her sanity. What I want is my 'boyfriend' to help me support my sister. Not to complain about our sex life-"
"What sex life?! That doesn't exist in our relationship! You don't even like kissing for too long in public!" He whines.
"Again, you're turning this on us. We have nothing to do with this conversation, Luis!" I start.
"I've had enough of this Ana! We're ready, please, I beg you. We can make it romantic in the back of my car," he starts to put his hand on my thigh and I smack it away.
"The fact that you think I'm going to let you hook up with me by saying shit to me like that is absolutely pathetic. I'm over here trying to talk to you about something important about my family that can affect me in so many ways, and all you can think about is how you feel sad because you haven't gotten any from me? You're a pig," I say and get up.
"Fuck, Annie, I didn't mean it that way. Estrella shouldn't have gone out pulling that crap is what I'm trying to say. Maybe if she was more like you she wouldn't be in this situation," he tries and I scoff him away.
"Cuz that speech is going to make it better," I mutter under my breath. "Come on, I need you to take me home."
"Are you serious?" He asks, twisting his mouth.
"Yes, dumbass, I am serious. Let's go!" I say, really annoyed with his whole self at the moment. He grunts and pushes his chair back and stands. I'm already out of the dining area when he starts walking towards my direction. I wait for him at the door while he pays at the front desk until we are good to go. I get in the car and it is dead silent. Neither one of us dares to say a word. He reaches my house and pulls up my driveway. I open the car door and hop out when I feel Luis' hand grab mine and I try to push him towards him. He leans forward as if trying to give me a kiss, but I push back so hard I heard his bone crack.
"No, when you learn how to be a gentleman then we can talk," I snap. He throws his head back and lets out a grunt.
"Annie, seriously, I'm sorry-" he starts.
"No, you'll truly be sorry when you put in an effort in us instead of your hormones. I'm saving you the trouble for next time. IT'S NOT HAPPENING!" I enunciate to make sure he gets the picture. Before he says another word I shut the door. I run up the driveway and let myself into my home and close the door behind me.
Great. Another problem.
