"Why so slumped guys?" Ms. Hayes asks as she passes by our table.
"Finals are going to drain out adolescents out of us. Is this how being old feels like?" Freddie asks. Ms. Hayes rolls her eyes and sits on top of a desk and eats a cupcake.
"Yes, Fredrick. That's exactly what being old feels like. If I had your name, I would feel old, too," she responds. I hear a snort coming from Dante's direction and a laugh from Naomi.
"You know cupcakes don't pass your body that easily like you remember, Ms. Hayes," Freddie comments while smirking. Ms. Hayes scoffs and dips her finger in the blue frosting off her cupcake and rubs it on Freddie's nose. He scrunches his nose and we all fall in laughter.
"You know, miss? Sometimes I forget you're a teacher," Freddie says while taking the frosting off his nose and tasting the blue dessert off his finger.
"You're going to remember that I am when you see your grade in a bit," she teases and his eyes expand.
"You know I'm joking, miss!" He starts.
"Uhuh, get back to work," Hayes says while moving to another table.
I turn to Zamari who is working on his chemistry study guide and he doesn't seem to be having a problem filling it out.
"You seem like you're getting the hang of it. I told you studying early will help a lot," I say hoping he finally gives me credit for being a great tutor.
"I have to say, you knew Brown's study guide pretty well. Is this going to be on the test?" He asks.
"The concepts, yes, but with different numbers," I say. I knew this was almost identical to Brown's test because I've gone over it many times with many students since I became a tutor. Brown never changes her test.
"Bet. Now let me go thank Naomi for teaching me how to do the problems," he starts and I hit my head with the palm of my hand.
He starts laughing and puts his paper inside his folder. It's time to leave which means I have to bundle up in my warm oversized sweater and face the cold air outside. Ever since the antique store trip with Zamari, it's been getting colder and colder every day. Zamari gets up and pulls down his grey sleeves and I can't find the ability to look away. Something about guys wearing long sleeves makes them look attractive.
"What?" He catches me looking. I shake my head and quickly run my fingers through my hair.
"You look comfy," I play it off.
"Anastacia, stop it. You're taken. I can't be that guy. It won't look good for me," he jokes while shrugging. I roll my eyes.
"Shut up!" I snap, and he starts laughing.
I put the rest of my stuff in my bag and throw the sweater over my head. I walk over to Esme and Naomi who were looking at a sheet of paper.
"What's that?" I ask.
"Oh, here! It's the list of things we have planned for the trip. The things that are highlighted in yellow are the things that are going to be covered," she says while handing me the paper.
I look it over and see a coordinated schedule of what we'll be doing every day and what we have to pay for. The overall estimated budget is right around my price range. I smile just imagining myself with my friends chilling my Miami beach not having to worry about school. That might actually happen.
"Naomi, this is perfect! I'll make sure to talk to my mom about it and I'll give you an answer soon!" I say hugging the paper.
"Yay! I'm so excited! And look, we're planning on going snorkeling on Noah's birthday!" She says pointing on Thursday's schedule. I look over it and supposedly we're going to Miami that morning and travel to Key West and have a whole day snorkeling in the ocean. I can't believe it.
"Your mom is a miracle worker. How did she get us these trips at cheap prices?" Esme asks jumping into the conversation.
"She knows people. That and we have family all over there so we get some good stuff," she answers and we laugh.
"Seriously, though. We can't miss this trip. It will be the best way to end senior year," Naomi says grinning.
"It will be my first drip with Dante," Esme mentions.
"Oh, that. Mom says boys and girls are going to be separated. We'll be in the same house, but girls will be on one floor and boys on another," Naomi rolls her eyes. I laugh when she stops looking up at the heavens.
"You thought she'd let you share a room with Noah?" I ask still half laughing.
"I thought maybe she'd forget! But I guess there's going to be cameras or whatever and my Tia and Tio are going to be checking up on us, or something like that," she crosses her arms. I continue laughing until we hear the bell.
"It's not that funny!" Naomi says but starts to laugh too.
"Of course not," I say, smiling while walking out the classroom and into the hallway.
