"Hamilton." Ms. Hayes' voice snaps me out of the pre-class dozing I had been doing. I glance at my phone and see that class is already starting. I dig in my backpack for a pencil before settling back into my chair. The SAT hadn't been that long ago and my brain is still fried. I'm having a hard time remembering what day of the week it is, let alone what I'm supposed to be doing in class. I rub a hand over my face, the fuzzy edges of sleep still blurring my thoughts as I attempt to focus on Hayes explanation of what we will be doing.
"I'm sure a lot of you know about the musical that has been garnering a lot of attention lately, about one of the founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton."
Who keeps up with the musicals coming out? Did musicals still even exist? I wonder if that's something Ana would be into. She's nerdy enough for it. I'd love to see her out of her element, not focused on school and homework. Dante has a birthday party coming up next weekend, maybe she'll let her hair down. I realize I've once again completely zoned out of the description of today's work and turn my focus back to Hayes.
"Our next unit will be focused on the study of this musical in a literary sense, even if it is much more modern than a lot of literary studies you would do in school. I want you to get into pairs." A murmur rises throughout the room as people already start choosing who they will work with. Ms. Hayes raises her voice as she continues above the din of the classroom. "If you find yourselves incapable of pairing up responsibly I am more than happy to make the groups myself."
The classroom settles back down impressively fast, and Hayes pulls herself onto her desk, leaning back on her palms in a stance very un-teacher-like.
"The assignment is for today, to research a bit about the musical. I can make you do that since I'm the teacher and I have very teacherly duties..very important things." Her eyes stray to the sandwich she has sat on her desk and I snort.
"I want you guys to work together to gather information and choose a song to research. And don't think that because today is a work day you get a free period to sleep, we will be having a discussion as a class next time we meet and I most definitely will know if you did the work or not." She hops off the desk and picks up her sandwich, our dismissal to find a partner and get to work.
I turn around and my eyes catch on Ana, who is already looking at me. I wiggle my eyebrows at her and gestured for her to come to join me. She scoops up her backpack and claims the chair next to mine.
"I knew you couldn't resist me," I say suggestively and she pretends to gag.
"Don't flatter yourself, it's a lesser evil kind of deal."
"I'll choose to ignore that sensible explanation."
"Of course you will. Denial is a disease, but the first step to a cure is admitting you have a problem."
I look over one shoulder, then the other before I say innocently, "Me? A problem?"
"Exactly."
