I walk out of Harold's class with my books and notebook tight to my chest. I talked to the principal to let her know I'm going to need the last two periods off for at least a week so I can go home and watch for Estrella. Part of that was true, but the other part id I'm not ready to talk to Zamari yet. I say bye to the group and race to the parking lot. I'm out of the building when I feel someone tug my hand.
"Ana, can we talk?" I hear a familiar voice and I turn to see Luis standing a foot away from me.
"No," I say and try to continue walking, but he pulls again.
"What did I tell you about Zamari, huh?" He hisses.
My body is faced towards him but I look away. "You really have the nerve."
"What?" He asks, confused.
"Why the hell did you let him do that? You knew we broke up and you pulled him into this shit, to what? Try to get back with me if he ended up in jail? You're sick," I snap.
"Is that what he told you? No, he was practically begging me for the money and when I said no he stole it."
"No, m'hijto, I know what's going on and how you're involved in a gang and you let Zamari in and gave him the money. You used him and ruined him at the end,"
"And why do you care so much about him, huh?"
"Because he was my friend, Luis! He was always just my friend and if you thought I cheated on you with him then you got it twisted. You were the one who had to go around and fuck some other girl and then blame Zamari for our breakup. Just accept that you went through all of this trouble and I still don't want you, and I never will," I pull away.
"No, you're not leaving me that easily," he grabs my arm and pulls me towards him again. His hands wrap around my wrist tightly that I can't move.
"Luis, let me go!" I cry out. I struggle to let go but he keeps pushing himself on me.
"Hey!" I hear someone yell. I turn and see Zamari heading towards our direction, aiming at Luis. Luis lets go and moves to the direction where Zamari is coming from. I can see Zamari ready to kick the shit out of Luis and I panic.
"Don't you ever touch her again," Zamari throws his hands across Luis' chest. "So the first time wasn't enough, huh?"
I scramble towards them and try to get in the middle. "No! Stop it!" I yell. I push Zamari because I know he'll listen to me.
"You guys are both in enough trouble, now let it go," I say and Zamari listens.
"Ana, he's been telling you lies. I don't know why you're believing him," Luis says.
"Cut the bullshit, Luis. You know damn well what you did!" Zamari yells back.
"You're just lucky that your daddy came to save you because if he didn't you would have been gone in a split second,"
"You're tied up more in this. They were just being nice to you when they said you're going to prison,"
"Both of you just stop! I don't know what the prize is for any of this. Me? Because if it is I'm telling you right now that it's not going to happen for either one of you. I'm done listening to your explanations and I'm done with being a part of this," I say and turn quickly and walk down the parking lot.
I walk as quickly as I can to avoid having anyone see me. I open my car and start getting in when I feel someone tug me. I turn and see Luis again.
"Go away!" I cry out.
"Ana, please, just let me talk!" He starts and I stay quiet.
"Look I'm sorry that I've hurt you. Cheating on you was the stupidest thing I've ever done. I wanted you and I still do. Zamari was just in the way and I needed a loophole so we can be together again. I promise you I will never hurt you again, just please, give me another chance."
I feel all the blood leave my body. My mind goes completely blank and I know I'm not in control with myself. I get out of the car and move towards him. I feel his hands move to my waist and he tries to pull me closer to him. I close my eyes for a second and when I open them I watch my hand swap across the air and land straight to his cheek. He bounces back from the surprise and I open the door and hop in before he can catch me again.
"I swear to God, Luis if you ever come near me again, you're dead," I say and slam the door closed. I put the car in reverse and swerve my way out of the parking lot.
As I'm about to get on the road I see Zamari still in front of the school looking straight at me. Our eyes meet and I feel the air escape my lips. My body weakens and I suddenly remember the day we were at the beach a couple of weeks ago. He gave me the same look but with more light in his eyes. They were pure and happy. I blink rapidly and come back to earth. I shake my head and turn my blinker on and make my way home.
