Going to a midwife clinic is different than going to a hospital or a medical clinic. To start off, it's a home and the birthing center is right next door. The living room is slightly bigger than mine, but the hallway is wider and longer and it's filled with multiple doors I'm guessing for patients. Elisa, the midwife, took Estrella into a room about 10 minutes ago just to do an observation of how she's doing and was going to take us to a room so we can all see the baby's ultrasound. Mom and Julian are sitting on the couch next to mine each of them with a book in their hands. I smile seeing how much they are alike. I wonder if that's how Estrella and her baby are gonna be like in the future.
I hear a door screech open and we all get up. Julian looks up but doesn't move from his chair. Estrella walks out smiling at the doctor and rubbing her baby bump. This is a different image than the time I took her to the clinic.
"Well, you're doing fine. We just have to check your blood tests and we'll talk about results the next time you come over," Elisa says with an accent. "Now if you want we can look at the baby. We won't do ultrasounds every time you come over but because I haven't seen the baby I'm going to take a look."
Strella turns to us I turn and tell Julian that we're going to go into the room with Strella.
"Are we going to see the baby?" He asks, getting off the couch.
"Si, mijo," Mom says smiling and fixing his flying hairs. "Te vas a portar bien, eh?" You're going to behave, okay?
"Si," he responds with a big grin.
We follow Elisia and Strella down the hall and enter a bedroom with a queen size bed and machines surrounding the back. The walls are painted a dark blue and a dim light from the closet shines from the corner of the room. Elisa starts cleaning the machines and turning them on.
"You can make yourself comfortable. If you guys want to hop on the bed it's fine," Elisa offers and Julian doesn't hesitate to do so.
Yeah, this is very different than the clinic. This is where mom came when she was pregnant with Julian, but I don't remember it being like this. Strella gives me a look and pulls the bedsheets up and digs inside the covers. I snort as I watch her curl herself under the sheets. Mom scowls her but Strella doesn't pay attention. Elisa and mom talk for a while the machines boot up. They catch up on what they've been up to and talk about how big we've gotten.
"Well, it's a surprise to see Estrella come here at such a young age, but we don't judge here. We just want our patients to feel comfortable being here and comfortable with their babies," Elisa says giving Strella a smile.
There are other workers? I thought it was just Elisa. Mom sits next to Strella and puts her hand on her belly. She's been doing this lately and it makes Strella uncomfortable, but she doesn't seem to mind it right now.
"You know you can find out the gender today. Would you like to know?" Elisa asks Strella and she shoots me a look.
"Do you want to know yet?" I ask.
"Adrian isn't here. I don't want to know without him," she responds.
"So no?"
"I'll wait until the next appointment,"
"Aye, pero quería a saber si iba tener nieto o nieta!" Aw, I wanted to know if I was going to have a granddaughter or grandson. Mom says. Julian is at Strella's feet pouting.
"Not yet. Next time I have an ultrasound I'll find out the sex. Adrian couldn't make it this time so I'll wait for him," Strella says pulling the bedsheets to her.
