TRICK OR TREAT, FREAK

IT WAS HALLOWEEN, WHICH MEANT JESSICA JOHNSON'S HOUSE WAS GOING TO BE DECORATED TOP TO BOTTOM WITH HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS. She used to love Halloween, she looked forward to it, but it was something that she used to do with her whole family.

Her father always took her out trick or treating while her mother stayed home and handed out candy to the kids. Halloween was her mother's favourite time of year.

In a lot of ways, her mother was more of a kid than she ever was. She always went way out with Christmas decorations, Halloween decorations, thanksgiving, and anything that had to do with any holiday her mother was up for decorating.

It's not that she didn't love the holidays, she did, it was the memories that made her hate them.

Seeing her father in a costume while taking her out, him smiling when she said trick or treat at the door. She's been thinking about him a lot lately. Ever since she found out the truth Jess was thinking more about him. It didn't help looking at old family photos every night when she found out about the truth. It didn't help her at all.

"Jess, can you hang up the lights?" Her mother, cheerful as ever interrupted her from her thoughts.

For a women who just found out her father was ruled for 'murder as a cover up story' she was taking it better than Jess was.

"Sure, Mom." Natalie smiled and gave her daughter orange lights to string in the house.

She hated Christmas lights. Any type of lights.

After they killed that beast, she swears she sees them flicker constantly during the day even if they weren't turned on in the first place. Jess picked up a tack and pushed it in the wall.

"Are we going to talk about it?" Natalie asked, putting some candy into a bowl.

"Talk about what, Mom?"

"The boy who dropped you off yesterday. Who was he?"

"He's no one." "Jess," her mother sighed. "I know we don't talk a lot, but if there's anything you want to talk about... like boys. I'm here for you. You know that, right?" Jess looked down.

"He's just a guy from school who offered me a ride home. Since you didn't answer your phone by the way. And besides his sister was there. We went out for ice cream." "Oh, well that was nice of him. Is he cute?"

"Mom," she groaned. "He's just a guy from school." "Okay, okay fine. I just wanted to make sure." Jess looked away and rolled her eyes, causing her mother to smile. She loved to embarrass her. Natalie smiled and poured some more candy into a bowl. "Have any plans tonight? Or are you going to stay with me and hand out candy?"

"No. Nancy, Steve and I are going to that party, remember?" "Oh, that's right. I completely forgot about that. Remember to drink responsibly and don't do anything stupid."

Jess looked at her. "I'm not a stupid drunk."

Natalie laughed. "Are you dressing up?"

"You know I hate dressing up."

"You used to dress up all the time."
