WILL THE WISE

JESS WAS DREADING TO GO TO SCHOOL THAT DAY. She was up all night reading and listening to music after Steve left. He stayed till around midnight, and then he drove home. The whole time Jess couldn't shake the feeling of her own feelings. The way their fingers touched holding that photo, the way he looked at her, the way his hair flipped to the side. The way- "Ugh!" She yelled, throwing her white converse across the room and she slid down her wall, grabbing her hair in each direction.

"Honey," Natalie knocked on her door.

"What?"

"Everything okay? What are you throwing around in there? Can I come in?" Jess sighed.

"Sure, Mom."

Natalie opened the door and entered her daughters cluttered room. "What the hell happened here? Hey, are you okay?"

Natalie went over to her daughter. "I couldn't find my other shoe."

"You looked distress. What's going on with you?"

"I'm fine." She lied. She wasn't fine. It was hard enough to control her feelings. It was all stupid Steve's fault that brought this on. She huffed, putting her head in her hands. "I can't do this."

"Can't do what? What's wrong? I'm here, Jess."

Jess looked up at her mother's eyes. "Steve."

"What's wrong with Steve?" She sat down in front of her. "No. Nothing is wrong with Steve. Nothing. Well, he..." "what'd he do?" Jess sighed. "He tried to kiss me last night. Oh, god." She ran a hand through her hair. "Oh," her mother stared at her.

"Well, did he?" "No, Mom. I made it awkward as the awkward person as I am. And I can't kiss him. He's my best friend. And it's all too much!"

Natalie laughed, and continued laughing. Jess narrowed her eyes. "Your father and I, he was my best friend. I didn't like him at first, not in that way. Hell no. I spent half of my life with him. He will always be my best friend." "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying... it's okay if you love Steve. Like I loved your father. Steve is a great guy, and needs someone like you. Maybe he's just trying to figure out his feelings as well."

"But I don't have feelings for him." She muttered.

"Keep telling yourself that. I denied it everyday, but then it changed, and I just knew."

"He doesn't love me... he loves Nancy, I- I can't do that to her. I can't bring myself to like Steve in that way. It would ruin everything."

"I thought it would ruin what we had, too. But it didn't. It made it so much better when we found are true feelings." "This is too much," Jess ran a hand through her hair. "I know, sweetie. It will hurt because you want it so bad, it will be confusing, it will be the hardest thing you ever have to figure out. But trust me, in the end, it's all worth it. I'm not saying you have to figure it out right now, but I know Steve. Last night was just the beginning of him showing his feelings." Jess let out a breath of air she didn't know she was holding in.

"Thanks... Mom."

Natalie smiled. "You should have been a therapist." Natalie laughed. "Still can change my career." Jess shrugged. "Better than giving needles to kids and adults don't ya think?"
