"Happy birthday sweetheart." My voice caught in my throat. The last time I had heard his voice he had been scared and angry trying to save my life. I hadn't seen him that time but just looking at him I knew who he was, I could feel it. His eyes were the same as mine, without the red obviously. We even had the same nose. He stayed sat on the chair waiting for me to say something. He didn't look older than late twenties and his golden hair was short and messy, but in a way that looked like it was on purpose.
"Hi..." he smiled and walked over to me.
"I have been waiting for this moment for so long and now that it's here I feel completely lost for words."
"How are you here, I thought Damon bringing me down here meant you couldn't see me anymore?" he nods and stops about a foot away from me giving me some space.
"It did, and I don't know how he did it but he made it so I could see you. I'm guessing he's made some sort of deal with upstairs, but he wouldn't tell me. Why don't we sit down, we have a bit before I am to take you to your next surprise."
"There is more? I don't know what he could do that could beat this," we both move over the table and sit next to each other, "I used to be so mad at you. I thought you had abandoned us." I stare at the table unsure if I can look at him.
"I never wanted to leave you, I watched over you and your mother every single day. She was never the same after I was made to leave and for that I will never forgive myself. She was so vibrant and full of life when I knew her. I had never seen a human like her. Watching you grow up I could see the same thing. But as you grew more vibrant, she went more into her shell and after your brother was born, she became worse and I am so so sorry." I looked up and saw tears in his eyes. In part it was his fault. If he had just left her alone to begin with none of this would have happened but then I wouldn't have been born. He fell in love, but he never fell out of love and he never chose to leave.
"I don't blame you anymore, I used to, before I knew anything. But now I just want answers really." Slowly he took my hand in his and held it.
"I have been trying to come up with these answers, and so far, I don't have a lot. You show signs of both demon and angel and I can't explain that. Even when I was fallen you should have just been half angel. Even in your eyes, I can see more angel but there is still red there where there shouldn't be. I want to help you research and find out what happened and help train you. Me and Damon are both going to help you control your powers. Both the good and bad." His eyes never left mine as he was speaking and I could see the honesty in then, but I could also see the sadness. He hated that he had no answers for me.
"The bad...it took over yesterday and made me do something I didn't think I ever could...I'm scared I will lose control of it."
"Damon told me what happened, and I am sorry about your friend. We will make sure you don't lose control, but sweetheart, in my opinion, he deserved what you did to him." That made me smile slightly.
"How is mum?" Sam...Dad...sighed.
"She's not great. Without you, well, she's lost. I know Damon had been trying to find a safe way for you to return and show how that you are okay, but I don't know how successful he has been." Of course, he had been.
"Thank you for being honest." Smiling he puts his arm around my shoulder, and I can't help but rest my head on his. I never thought this would happen, I used to hate him so much for what he did.
"I am so proud of you Carmen," smiling I wipe away my tears before they can fall, "no more tears lets go and celebrate the rest of your birthday." Taking my hand, he leads us out of the pool and looks around.
"Where to next?" he purses his lips and laughs.
"To be honest I have no idea which way to go. We are meant to head to the ball room."
"We need to go right then, come on follow me." Leading the way, I take him down all the twisting corridors.
"How do you navigate this place, its like a maze."
"You kind of get used to it after a while." Laughing he puts his arm back around my shoulders and we walk in a comfortable silence. Just before we reach the ball room he stops and turns to face me, his face conflicted in the candlelight.
"Before we go in I want to ask you something, and of course you can say no. I know I already said bout training you, but I want to actually spend time with you, get to know you. Be the Dad I couldn't be. What do you think?" I cant help but feel happy, ever since I learnt the truth about him I had wanted to meet him and now, knowing that he wanted to be in my life I could help but say yes.
"I think that it sounds like a great idea." His face changed instantly from conflicted to elated and we both just stood smiling like idiots for a few seconds before the door creaked open.
"I thought I heard voices, come on we are all waiting." Caspar beckons us inside and disappears again. Still grinning I walk into the ball room and its incredible. The place is decorated in a lot of balloons and streamers, with white and red roses everywhere. A table is set up covered in amazing smelling party food, another table holds ever more presents and I can't help but feel overwhelmed. Damon, Caspar and Cole are stood smiling at me and Amber jumps in front of me handing me a glass of champagne.
"Happy birthday! Now you are here we can get this party started!" Clapping her hands together the room fills with music. Damon walks over and shakes hands with my Dad, it's a very weird sight.
"Good to see you again Sam." He snorts and shakes his head.
"Thank you for sorting all this, though it was your mess to begin with." I laugh and elbow him in the side. My laugh was cut of by a bright light the deafening bang and dust filling the room. Damon had thrown himself over me protecting me from any rubble. As the dust cleared, we all stood and looked at the new large hole in the ceiling and the figure walking through the dust.
"Happy birthday my sweet girl. Sorry I am late; the commute was a bitch." That voice...I knew that voice, but it sounded wrong. Cruel. I had never heard her voice like that. I went to step forward, but Damon held me back. She laughed and it sent chills down my spine, walking forwards I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing.
"Mum?" It was her, but I had no idea how and she appeared so different. The way she held herself, her smile didn't seem like hers.
"Yes of course it is. You don't think I would miss your birthday, do you? I knew your little boyfriend would have to feel bad enough to bring me down here eventually. I was supposed to be another one of his little surprises. First your Dad then your Mum, a real family reunion." Her voice dripped with sarcasm and that unnerving smile never faltered.
"What's the matter with you? How did you do that?" I went to move towards her again but both Damon and Sam pulled me behind them. I gave them both a confused look.
"Sweetheart, that's not your mother." Dad didn't look at me when he spoke, in fact I don't think his eyes had left me mum since she had burst in.
"Oh Sammy, poor naive Sammy. I am her Mother, but not the women you think you know."
"I don't understand." I spoke but my voice never left a whisper. Amber came over and gripped my hand.
"Of course you wouldn't. You see, you only know the tragic love story that was fed to you. But the true story is so much better," she practically glides over to one of the tables and sits on it swinging her legs as she speaks, "so after I was banished, I waited. I waited for the perfect opportunity to come back. I saw Sam come crashing down to earth all for some pathetic little human and realised that this was my chance." Damon stepped forward his eyes flashing in anger.
"Banished? What do you mean?" My mum waved her hand in his direction and he went flying into a wall. I couldn't help the scream that escaped and tried to run over but Amber's grip on hand kept me where I was. Caspar was there in a flash helping him up.
"I don't appreciate being interrupted, now, where was I? Oh yes, I decided to inhabit the little human's body. It's something I picked up over the centuries of living up there, it only lasts a few days, which was long enough to seduce Sam and get this body pregnant. I didn't quite expect things to go this way, I was going to wait until you were 18 and take you away from this form and train you myself. We were going to be a force that nobody could stop." Her body began to ripple slightly and before my eyes my mothers body dropped to the ground and in her place stood another. Her form was willowy and her skin so pale it was almost translucent. Her lips were the colour of blood and her eyes almost as black as her hair that practically floated with power around her.
"Lilith." Amber growled, I had never heard that anger in her voice before. Lilith stepped over my mother as if she were rubbish.
"Come along Carmen we have work to do." She waved her hand again, this time at Amber and she went flying next to Damon. Cole ran from the side, looking as if he were about to tackle her. Before he even got close he was floating in the air gripping his throat.
"Stop this!" I didn't even know what I was doing I just pushed out with my hand and she went flying back into the table and Cole dropped to the floor unmoving. She stood and began clapping.
"Very good, I knew you had it in you. Having both my blood and your fathers means you have the potential to be the most powerful being in the room. Unfortunately, you aren't yet." With a push of her hands everyone is room, but me, was thrown to the floor.
"Why are you doing this?" I couldn't stop the tears now and they flooded down my cheeks. Walking up to me she wiped the tears from my face, her hands felt like ice and stone against my skin and I was so scared I couldn't move away.
"Revenge of course, after you are trained properly as my daughter, we will rule down here. Now come on we have work to do." The fear inside me was replaced by anger. My eyes met Damon's and I had never seen that kind of fear in his eyes, he couldn't move but I could see him straining and trying to move towards me.
"I am not going anywhere with you!" I tried to harness the power I had felt before and pushed it towards her, this time she saw it coming and managed to dodge it. Laughing she pushed it back at me and I flew backwards landing hard on the floor. Anger numbed the pain and I was up faster than I knew I could move.
"There is the demon is in you, I knew it would have to come out eventually." I could feel my eyes flashing red and the same darkness I felt when I tore Tom's killer into pieces took over me. I ran at Lilith determined to end this. Jumping on her I caught her by surprise and we both fell to the floor. I used all my strength and managed a few hits before she used her power to lift me in the air, restraining me with some unseen force. She ran her finger along her lip and looked surprised to see blood.
"Let me go!" I hardly recognised my own voice; it was filled with pure anger.
"I almost feel proud. No more games now, we really do have to go, little Terry is waiting for us." That made me stop struggling.
"Where is he?" that overwhelming fear returned, in all of this I hadn't even thought of my little brother.
"He's waiting for us at home, safe and sound. Terry is not mine you see, he really is this women's, which makes him expendable. So, are you going to behave?" I nodded, not trusting my voice. Slowly she brings me back to the floor and holds out her hand waiting.
"Carmen don't!" Damon shouts at me his voice shaking in fear. I look around and both Amber and Cole are unconscious, Sam is frozen in horror and Caspar is in tears. I can save them all and Terry. I can stop this.
"Goodbye Damon." I walk over and take Lilith's hand. The world rushes around me and goes dark.
