McKenna came over, and started her opening spiel. She introduced herself, explained the badge levels, talked briefly about FRIDAY, and finally passed out the passes in alphabetical order to everyone except for Peter.
When she passed out the last pass, Flash spoke up. "Um, miss?" He said. "Yes?" McKenna said, looking at him.
"Parker didn't get a pass," He said, smirking at Peter.
"Oh, that's because he already has his own!" She said brightly, smiling and looking at Peter. "SI has a very strict policy on reprinting passes. One, it's a security risk for higher level badges like Peter here's, and two, it's extremely wasteful."
Flash's smirk dropped, and a shocked expression appeared on his face. Then, a subtle undercurrent of anger rippled through his expression.
When McKenna led them into the next room where the security scanners were, Flash sidled up next to Peter and whispered angrily, "How much did you have to pay her to act like she knew you?"
"Shove off, Flash," Peter said, and just walked up to the front of the line. He took out his pass from his bag and held it in his hand. It was a small, square-shaped pass, that was clear with gold lettering on it. It had his name, date of birth, and pass level, although that was clearly displayed because of the small gold bar across the top.
He walked through the scanner, swiping his pass.
"Parker, Peter. No weapons unauthorized. No floors unauthorized. Hello, Peter." FRIDAY said.
He stood nonchalantly to the side after that, ignoring the stares and whispers of his classmates. At least now nobody would have a reason to doubt that he had an internship.
