"Thousands of years ago, during the reign of the Pharaohs, Egypt was in danger yet again. This time though, from its own people. People were becoming different than they had been. They were becoming...influenced by something. They became out of control, fighting with one another like wild animals, even when no one provoked them. It was chaos.

"For months the Pharaoh ruling at the time and his priests tried to uncover the source of the people's madness. When they discovered it, a new kind of creature was created; the Ka, the monster that lives in one s soul. The people's problem was that their monster was becoming to powerful and was taking control of the person's mind.

"After months of research, the Pharaoh and his priests discovered a magic with the power to release the monster from the person. The Pharaoh began destroying all of the Ka in people's souls in an endless slaughter known as "Ihem Kekewey" until he realized that not all of the Ka were trying to harm the world. His own son, Damon, contained a Ka, but unlike most, it did not control him. In fact, it protected him when he was in danger."

"What was his Ka?" Atem asked curiously.

"According to legend, it resembled the monster you call 'Red Eyes Black Dragon'."

Joey laughed. "Of course it would be. Ol' Red Eyes has always been a gentle giant that'll kick anyone's can who tries to hurt him or his friends."

"How did it save him?" Tèa asked.

"When Damon's monster was released, he begged his father not to destroy it. The Pharaoh reluctantly agreed and the next day, the palace was attacked. When Damon was captured, the dragon appeared and rescued him. Red Eyes drove the entire enemy force away by itself, saving the kingdom. It was then that the Pharaoh realized that they could train the Ka to fight for them, rather than destroying them.

"Years passed and by the time Damon became Pharaoh, they had collected dozens of monsters that were prepared to do their bidding. The only problem was that they were unpredictable, sort of like wild animals. Damon's father was killed trying to train a Ka that turned on him. The Pharaoh's needed monsters that they could always trust and were always ready to do anything to protect the kingdom.

"It was then that a certain woman was discovered. She contained a monster that was beyond what they had ever previously encountered. It was a great golden dragon-phoenix with the power of the Sun. The woman's name was Ra. When the priests attempted to separate her from the Ka, the magic that had always worked, failed. Ra said it was her doing. She claimed that she not only had full control of her monster, but she could BECOME the monster as well. When she demonstrated, her human body disappeared, replaced with the golden dragon. But unlike before, this monster had the human eyes of Ra and it could talk.

"She and Damon became great friends and soon they discovered that Ra wasn't the only one with this gift. Many other people were being found with a similar power. With the help od Ra and her two closest friends, Obelisk and Osiris, Damon founded the creation of the guardians. The three became the most powerful people to ever have lived on this Earth and were seen as Gods from then on. With their help, the guardians became the greatest protection for the Pharaohs.

"The guardians' role was to protect the Pharaoh, at all costs. And they accomplished this by following a strict set of rules known as 'the guardian law'. This code stated many rules that the guardians were required to follow. 'The Pharaoh comes first' and 'Absolutely NO relationships with the Pharaoh other than advising' were the two major laws that we were required to follow in order to ensure the Pharaoh's safety. At first, all the guardians protected the Pharaoh but soon they discovered that only one could truly protect him. That one had to be assigned to that Pharaoh. They were assigned by a test through the telling of their future, read by the elders. Then that one was was the Pharaoh's personal guardian until tha day he or she died. Then the guardian was replaced with another guardian that wasn't assigned to a specific Pharaoh, but was still willing to do the job. This guardian was known as an Artxe. When that Artxe dies, it is replaced, and so on. The guardians that had a specific Pharaoh to protect were called the Layols.
