Stella and I walked hand in hand to the pond that we visited in winter. We sat on the edge of the bridge, overlooking the pond. Stella scooted closer to me, until our thighs were touching.

She looked up at me, and the dizzying urge to kiss her flooded through my veins once again. I looked away, knowing that if I kept staring at her, I was going to give in. It was so tempting. But I wanted to play it safe.

For now.

"So," Stella broke the silence. "When did you find out about the B-Cepacia?"

"About an hour before you showed up."

"Wow," Stella smiled. "That's amazing."

"Yeah," I laughed and shook my head. "Tell me about it."

Stella was about to say something, but was cut off by the sharp ringtone of her cell phone. She glanced at the caller ID and turned to me.

"It's Michael." She stated, as if I knew.

Uh. Not to be Debbie-Downer, but who the hell was Michael? I shot her a sideways glance, expressing my downright confusion.

"Poe's old boyfriend." Stella whispered before answering the call.

Still doesn't ring a bell.

"Hello?" Stella spoke into the phone.

She was quiet for a minute. Stella glanced at me before turning her attention back to her call.

"Will and I are on our way," Stella hopped up. "Thanks, Michael."

"Where are we going?" I inquired.

"Starbucks. Apparently Poe left me a gift and Michael wants to give it to me."

* * *

Stella and I were silent as we approached the coffee shop. As promised, Michael was there, holding a gift box and card. He handed it to Stella as we reached him.

Not hesitating, Stella tore open the card. After a few minutes of silence, she started to cry. She was trying not to, but the tears wouldn't stop. I took an unsure step closer to her, and she handed me the letter before burying her head in my shoulder. I guided her to the nearest bench outside; sitting the both of us down. Slowly, I read the letter.

Stella,

I love you. Always remember that. I don't know if I will be able to deliver this in person, but I sure hope I get too.

You are my best friend. My greatest advocate. I don't think I would have made it this far without you. My wish for you is that you live long enough to experience new lungs and fall in love. Maybe get married. (To Will PLEASE.) To love a life and inspire so many people like you already do. You are a hero, Stella. You are also a Queen. I hope you find a King that cherishes you with everything inside him. (AHEM! WILL.)

No matter what happens, I will always be with you. I love you.

Love, Poe

I looked over to Stella, who was holding on to me for dear life. Even though I haven't known Poe and Stella to long, I know how much he means to her. Or how much he meant.
