Stella sure seemed upset. But I was confined to this bed, so there was nothing I could do. Eventually, Jason and Hope came to see me. But, they left after an hour. So I was back to being alone. I figured that Stella would show up within the next day.
But she didn't.
For an entire week.
While I had absolutely no clue what Stella had been up to, I for one had a jam-packed week. It was full of X-Rays, lung-tissue biopsies, blood work, and pain killers. I had just started to doze off when the door opened.
Stella.
I sighed, trying to hide the fact that I was happy to see her. " Well, she finally shows up. What do you want now?"
"Will," Stella pulled up a chair. "Answer this question with the truth. And nothing but the truth."
"Alright, Judge Stella. Shoot."
"Has a doctor confirmed that you are infertile?"
"What?" I asked, shocked.
"You heard me
"Oh, Stella," I sighed. "No, but the chances are like 1 out of 2,000."
"Still," Stella pressed. " We could possibly have a baby. I did the research."
"Look," I threw up my hands. "As much as that would be nice, I think we should just focus on us right now. You know, like buying a house or shit like that."
"Alright," Stella gave me a look. "Just promise me that eventually you'll get tested."
"Fine. Whatever to make the Queen happy."
We were silent. Eventually I motioned for Stella to join me on the bed. She gave me a quick kiss before lying down.
"I'm sorry. For not visiting. I just...needed time." Stella explained.
I let my fingers run wild in her hair. "I'm sorry too. For making assumptions. But just let me know if your feelings change at all."
Stella looked up at me. "Trust me, their not."
"On a much lighter note," I continued. "I'm being transferred from the ICU into a high dependency ward tomorrow. I'll be there for about two weeks, then I'll camp out in room 315 for a month just in case anything happens."
"Good." Stella yawned.
"Aww. Tired of my sexiness already?" I teased. She slapped me in response.
"Watch it, Stella. Two can play at this game." I cracked a smile before kissing her forehead.
"So, now what?" Stella asked. "After you recover."
"Well," I sighed. "We could travel together. Get a house. Do normal 'couple' stuff."
Stella laughed. "Couple stuff?"
"Yeah," I cleared my throat. "Like hold hands and do other sappy stuff."
"You are hopeless romantic, Will." Stella turned her attention to my chest. "How does it feel?"
In response, I unbuttoned the hospital gown to my waist; reveling every single scar that was etched onto my body.
Stella's hands hovered over the most recent one. "It looks fine to me. Pain?"
"On and off. Only if I move a lot."
"Yeah." Stella replied. "Its gonna be like that for a bit."
I sighed. "Tell me about it."
"Its almost over, Will," Stella whispered. "Almost over."
