Chapter 37

Making his way through the crowd and following the exact route that Shaurya had once shown him, Vihaan hastily reached the wooden door of the guest room. With a gleeful expression and an innocent smile on his face, he pushed the door open as gradually as he could.

He was expecting to see Sanchi inside the room but his mouth dropped when he didn't find her there. An old lady was sound asleep on the bed and he remembered Nidhi's words. Assuming the old woman to be Nidhi's grandmother, he paved his way inside.

He decided to wait, presuming Sanchi would return to her room some time or the other. Placing the dress on top of the drawer, he took his seat on the chair beside it. As his elbow rested comfortably on the drawer top, it unintentionally spilled the water from the jug, on to the notebook. Trying to wipe out the excess water, his eyes fell on the handwritten note and he easily identified Sanchi's handwriting.

When Sanchi moved out of the bathroom, she was stunned to see Vihaan in the room. Moreover, the dress on the drawer and the notebook in his hand weren't difficult for her to realize that he had discovered everything. All she knew that she was yet under the veil and had a chance to protect herself from Vihaan's wrath.

Before she could plan something, Vihaan threw the notebook on top of the drawer again and hurried his way out of the room. Sanchi quickly followed him to the door thinking he hadn't recognized her. All she could feel that Vihaan's rage was going to burst on her, once he had found Sanchi after the ceremony.

All her false assumptions came to a standstill when Vihaan stopped in the middle of the corridor and uttered in a critically calmed tone, "Stop following me, Sanchi. Just go back to what you were doing so far."

Unable to figure out of how she would react to the situation, she only asked, "How do you kn-ow it's me?"

"People may not be able to recognize you behind this cover but you can never go unnoticed from my eyes, not when you have left your feet uncovered. The tiny mole on your big toe proves to be the biggest evidence," Vihaan uttered in a low and painful voice.

"I am so-rry." The three words were the only ones Sanchi could utter because her heart had already started aching with remorse.

"For what, Sanchi? You didn't commit any mistake, or did you?" Vihaan complained, with his back turned to her.

Sanchi was caught in between her love and guilt, and for either of the reasons, she was not able to gather courage to see him in the eyes. "I kn-ow I did and you have all the rea-sons to be angry on me. I'm so-rry again, I could-n't help it at all. Nidhi is my eld-est sister and the lady in the room is my grand-mother. My par-ents are also here to attend Vidya's marr-iage and I had to take my cover. There was-n't any option to keep my-self away from them."

Vihaan crossed his arms on his chest. "You had already told me there are grave reasons behind your runaway from home and I respect it. You have taken a cover tonight and you did what you thought was right. You chose not to meet me or inform me about it because you thought it was right. I appreciate all your hard work."

Sanchi could feel the painful disparage in his voice. "You are just mock-ing me, I know, Vih-aan."

"I am not, indeed I made a mockery of myself tonight. I fought with the rude girl Nidhi only to get back your dress from her. I didn't trust her thinking she had snatched it from you. But I was wrong and she was right. The little scribble on the notebook says it all," Vihaan said causally, though the pain was visible in his eyes.

"I kn-ow but... I can't ex-plain you why I did it. I know how Ni-dhi has been since child-hood and refu-sing her wasn't easy." Sanchi nodded her head.
