"You've been dyeing your hair by yourself all this time?" Jin said as he placed the brush down and started taking off his gloves. "Isn't that difficult?"
"Not really, I've gotten better at it throughout the years." The younger responded as he placed his phone down on the sink. He had messaged Jihyo that he was hanging out with a friend and his sister seemed to be happy for him instead of questioning, which made him feel very grateful. "It used to be really time-consuming since I was so scared of leaving streaks and had to be careful with how much I used but now I've gotten better at it."
He could hear Jin's hum in response as he continued cleaning up all the supplies they had gotten out. As the older was busy he inspected himself in the mirror to make sure he had no blue streaks. He had been a bit apprehensive about letting someone else dye his hair but Jin had done a pretty good job and it was nice not having to do it by himself for once.
The silence seemed to stretch on as Jin kept cleaning leaving Jeongguk antsy as he just sat in front of the mirror. He knew the older must have endless questions he wanted to ask but it really made him happy he wasn't pushing him.
But that also was making him feel a bit bad. Jin had already made it clear he didn't expect anything from helping him but he was just being so helpful. And what would he have done if Jin hadn't been able to show up and save him in the alley?
He honestly couldn't think of a single scenario where things wouldn't have turned terrible for him.
Jin was truly helping him without a motive, and that didn't even include the legal issues with this. If Jeongguk was ever caught by the government for hiding his identity he knew he'd be punished but what about Jin? Everyone knew about the laws so he must know how grave the consequences could turn out for him. The fact he was willing to risk his life with nothing in return just to help out someone, help out him, really made Jeongguk conflicted.
It felt like he was taking advantage of Jin's kindness and he hated that. He wanted to be able to do something in return but the constant thought of him not making his own choices was haunting him. Without a doubt he knew him having to call Jin was a scenario his story had pushed him into. But he couldn't stay angry at how his plot was going, he never would be able to get anything done if he did that.
So Jeongguk decided that the best solution was to answer some questions about his hair. As long as he avoided some of the sensitive topics from his past it didn't seem too personal to share them and he already felt like he could somewhat trust the older anyways.
"It, uh, turns back once a week." He said quietly. "It just like turns back to blue as if there were no traces of black in it at all so I always have to be prepared and dye it before it changes back. I've tried like different brands of dye and stuff over the years but it always manages to fade back after a week."
"Wouldn't it be easier to wear a wig?" Jin said as he realized the younger wasn't going to continue talking. "So you wouldn't have to take time to dye it?"
"I think I would be too scared to wear a wig. Like if it were to fall off my head or something I wouldn't know what to do. I just feel more secure having my actual hair be black, well having it look black I guess. No matter what I'm still stuck as a protagonist, I just have to try my best to not let anyone know."
"What about buying it? I know you just go to the store but how do you afford it?" Jin replied as he looked for any discomfort in the younger's face. It was clear he was trying to make sure he wasn't overstepping any boundaries with his questions and Jeongguk couldn't help but smile at the older's care. "The cost of it surely adds up."
"It gets expensive but I get by, the whole thing with my story trying to ruin anything I do gets a bit difficult with work sometimes but it's not like unbearable."
He could hear a scoff from the older as if he was disciplining him for acting so relaxed about the situations his story put him in.
"Okay, I wasn't talking about the whole drunk guy almost killing me as being unbearable. I meant more like getting stuck with a ton of hours and struggling with time management. Although now it's the total opposite I suppose. I lost my wallet and all my money and I have nowhere near enough hours at work to feel comfortable with how much I own. I was thinking about getting another job but Taemin mentioned something about the school making him work less hours at the cafe so I'm worried if I do I'll somehow get caught and be in trouble at school for having two jobs."
The silence Jeongguk received in response was making him feel even more anxious and he couldn't help but focus his gaze on Jin. The older appeared to be deep in thought but as soon as his eyes glanced up and noticed the younger looking at him he smiled.
"Well I did end up buying the hair dye in bulk so you shouldn't have to worry about buying more anytime soon. And I live alone so it'd be easy enough to just leave it here."
"You're saying that I should come here and you can dye my hair on Fridays?" Jeongguk said as he scrunched his eyebrows and looked to see Jin nodding. "Are you sure?"
"Yeah, you deserve to have a break from all the bad things anyway."
Without a doubt relying on Jin to dye his hair would make his life easier. He wouldn't have to worry about his sister or parents asking why he was in the bathroom for so long and he could just keep one job since he wouldn't have to buy the hair dye. It seemed like his life after moving to Seoul he kept being handed good opportunities and that in itself was scaring him.
He didn't want to be greedy and lose everything but at the same time he didn't want fear to keep him from being happy. Being around another protagonist, being around someone who knew he was hiding his identity and was willing to help, made him feel so much safer. After everything he did deserve his story to go easy on him and instead of being constantly scared of what bad thing was going to happen next he needed to relish in the good moments.
"Okay."
Before Jeongguk could say anything else he felt a pair of arms wrap around his waist pulling him forward. He couldn't help but laugh at the olders reaction until he realized his head was rested against his chest.
"Hyung, I haven't washed my hair out yet!" The younger whined as he tried to push himself out of the older's hold. "You're going to get black hair dye on your shirt."
"I can buy a different shirt, it doesn't matter. I'm just so happy you're allowing me to help you."
Jin's voice was coated in relief and the younger couldn't help but smile in how genuinely happy he was. He noted how his own vision was getting glassy as he laughed at Jin's words and rested his head fully on the older's chest.
"Yeah, me too."
