FUKISHIMA, JAPAN

It had been a good two hours since the human and the android had arrived at Fukushima, not that they actually planned on stopping at this prefecture in particular.

They would've continued to ride the train to another place even farther away from Tokyo— at least, Nagito tried to persuade the deviant— but ended up stopping at Fukushima because of his rumbling stomach to look for a place to eat.

Fukushima was another city just outside of of Japan's capital, though it was quite smaller compared to Tokyo.

However, it seemed more... calming and less overwhelming.

The people there were quite friendly and kind enough to give directions to Hajime— he and the human were posing as tourists in the area— as well as asking for any cheap eateries.

"Do you have the money with you?" Hajime turned and asked the albino.

"Of course I do—" Nagito dug into the pocket of his jacket to take out the packet of money only for his fingers to find nothing inside. Confused, he dug into his other pocket, frantically searching for that familiar brown packet. Panic painted itself on his face, as he continued to searched every part of his jacket but to no avail.

His already pale face became even paler as he drew the inevitable conclusion.

"What's wrong?" The android questioned.

"Hajime," Nagito looked at him. "I think I left the money back in the motel."

Shit.

"Wh-What? What do you mean you left it in the motel?" Hajime asked again in hopes he misheard the albino, his brows furrowing in frustration. Nonononono, this cannot be happening. The android's mind raced just like his pump regulator.

"Well, maybe if you hadn't dragged me out of the room back there, I would've taken the money just before we left!" Nagito retaliated, crossing his arms.

"Oh, so it's my fault now? What would you have done if I didn't come back to save your ass, huh?!" Hajime snapped at him in an angry tone right before immediately regretting it. It felt as though he had taken a knife made of hurtful words and stabbed it straight into Nagito's chest, because his eyes had a hint of hurt in them.

Control your emotions, a voice said.

Hajime's tensed expression softened and morphed into that of guilt. "I-I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that."

"No, I should be the one saying sorry," Nagito sucked a breath. He was about to say something self-deprecating when the brunet grabbed him by the shoulders tightly, looking at him intently.

"Forget it. We're arguing over something stupid and trivial," Hajime told him. "Let's just... hope we'll find someone who's kind enough to give you free food."

Nagito gave a simple nod, and they began to look for a place that was generous enough to provide them a free meal. Which, not to their surprise, was definitely harder that it seemed.

"I apologize. We don't offer free meals, sir."

"Excuse me, this is a restaurant. Not a food bank."

"... Please get out of here now."

Sadly, as friendly the locals in the area were, they weren't very keen on offering free meals to them— or Nagito, to be specific. The two had been walking from restaurant to restaurant, eatery to eatery, for a full hour. And even then, to no avail.

Unable to walk any longer from the fatigue building up in his legs, Nagito was relieved when he finally spotted an empty bench in the corner of his eye, and sat down with an exhausted huff. Unlike him, Hajime was perfectly fine. He was an android and therefore didn't feel any pain or tiredness.

However, his mind was the complete opposite.

He was frustrated. And annoyed.

It was coming to 5 in the evening, and Nagito hadn't eaten anything at all today, and it was a miracle he hadn't fainted from his empty stomach yet. Maybe it was the albino's good luck taking action— Nagito mentioned he was trapped in a cycle of good and bad luck on the train— but the android was too distracted by his concerning thoughts on the human's wellbeing.

"Damnit..." Hajime cursed.

His eyes searched frantically around the place, looking for anymore restaurants they hadn't visited and asked yet. Until his eyes stopped on a certain sign.

Asahina's, it was displayed on the signboard.

Its dying neon lights on the signboard as they flickered its brights colors faintly, though it looked much more illuminated as it was getting dark soon and night was approaching. Usually, the sun would still be out at this hour, but it was the winter season in Japan, and had shorted days because of that.

It seemed like a diner from the look of it.

Ah well, it's not like we have any other option left anyway.

"Ko?" Hajime tapped the human on the shoulder. "I found another place we can ask. Can you stand?"

He simply nodded, probably too tired to even speak, and he began to get up from the bench. That was understandable. He already a pretty frail and skinny body, not to mention he had been on an empty stomach all day.

They walked towards the old diner. Hajime pushed its glass doors open followed by the sound of a wind chime hanging from above the door. Punk rock music played faintly in the background, and orange luminescent lightbulbs hung from the ceiling and illuminating the place, giving off a warm ambience.

A long wooden counter was situated right in front of the entrance where the duo entered from. An old antique cash register sat on the counter, with a delicious smell of food coming from the kitchen which was right behind the counter.

"Wow..." Nagito looked around in wonder, his adorable expression bringing a smile onto the android's face. He then sat down on one of the chairs near the counter, which the pale human followed right after.

That's odd. There's no one here. Hajime thought.

"Hello? Is anybody here?" The brunet asked out loud, leaning against the counter. He repeated his question again a few times, peering into the kitchen to see if there was anyone in there just working away. But he couldn't see a single silhouette in there, and nobody came.

... Until a tanned young woman popped up from underneath the counter.

"Welcome to Asahina's, gentlemen! What can I get you?" She beamed in an energetic voice.

Her sudden appearance startled the shit out of the android, and he jumped back in surprise. He lost balance of his entire body and came tumbling down from his chair onto the floor.
