In the morning, Ruby got up extra early and got ready for school. She made breakfast for us, a bunch of fluffy looking golden circles she called pancakes. She made a bunch of them. Her appetite is definitely getting bigger the stronger she gets.
She placed a giant stack of pancakes in front of me and handed me a fork and knife along with some butter and syrup.
"I made blueberry, buttermilk and chocolate chip." She said tossing up some chocolate chips and caught them in her mouth. "I think you'll love them."
"We don't have pancakes on my planet. These smell amazing."
"Like I said, I think you'll love them."
I looked at the mountain of food in front of me and took a deep breath. Taking in the mouth watering smell. Moment of truth, I put a fork full of golden fluff in my mouth. One of the best decisions I've ever made. "Oh gods. This is so good." I shoved more in my mouth.
Ruby smiled proudly and poured a glass of milk for me. "I told you." She said taking her last bite. "Enjoy. I'm gonna go brush my teeth."
"Thanks kid."
My gods these pancakes are so good. Once I finished the last bite I washed whatever dishes were left. With the last dish dried and put away Sam came walking into the kitchen, rubbing her eyes as she sat down at the table.
"Morning sunshine. How are you feeling?"
"Zen?! Hey, what happened? I feel weird. Like I have no energy left."
"You don't remember anything?" I asked.
"Not really. Last thing I remember I was getting ready for bed, then I started hearing voices. Like whispers. Then nothing. Now I'm here." She said the last sentence with her nose slightly in the air. Something has her attention.
She followed the sent over to the oven and pulled out the stack of pancakes Ruby saved for her. "I thought I smelled pancakes." She was really excited. The sleepiness had completely left. "I'm so hungry." She drowned her pancakes in syrup and took a bite.
Ruby came running down stairs with her backpack and shoes. "Morning mom."
"Morning baby. Thank you for breakfast." Sam said kissing her daughter's cheek. "Let me finish breakfast and I'll take you to school."
"No it's ok mom, my friend Alex is picking me up today." Ruby paused. "She's here. I gotta go. Bye." She waved to us.
"Uhm. Ok bye." Sam was slightly confused. But shrugged it off and focused back on her pancakes.
I watched as she filled her mouth with the fluffy goodness. She's definitely coming into her powers, she ate all 20 pancakes and was now raiding the fridge. She made a big sandwich and ate it happily. Once she was done she looked at her empty plate even more confused. "Zen."
"Hum."
"Two things. First, Ruby said her friend Alex. She's never mentioned an Alex before."
"Oh don't worry, I know Alex, she's great."
She nodded. "And second, did I really just eat all that food?"
"Yes. Yes you did." I smiled. "How do you feel?"
"I don't eat that much I swear. I don't know where that came from. But I'm still hungry." She said raiding the fridge again. "Is there something wrong with me?"
"Nothings wrong with you sweetheart. Your body is just...changing."
She chuckled, "What like puberty? I went through that when I was 12."
