Ellington

When the ball dropped, I was extremely nervous. I was going to do it whether Rocky was watching or not. I think I had always known that our first kiss was not going to be in private. To be honest with you I think it is better that it wasn’t. That night saved all of the awkward conversations that would have followed our kiss. I could just imagine Riker’s face as I sat across from him on the Lynch’s family couch telling him I had gotten personal with his little sister. It would have gone something like “Hey Riker, so I um, just wanted to uh, see the thing is I uh... I kissed Rydel the other day and...*punch*.” Yeah okay so it maybe would not have been quite so violent but really I did not want to find out how the actual conversation was going to go.

So kissing Rydel on New Year’s may have been a coward’s move at getting passed the five sasquatches known as the Lynch boys, but it was also romantic. How many girls get to say that they had their first kiss under the stars after performing on center stage in Time Square? As far as I know, one. Anyway, the evening turned out better than I could have expected. Rydel seemed to be okay with my sudden burst of feelings and the guys took turns coming up and telling me it was about time I had acted on what they had apparently seen coming for a long time. If you ask me, Rocky was getting to their brains with his Rydellington crap but for whatever reason they all seemed to still like me.

Around 3am, the party had started to die down and Stormie and Mark said we were heading back to the hotel. Ryland told his parents that he was staying to finish being the after party DJ. This kid was so good at mixing, they had asked him to take over for the hired professional who had clearly partied a little too hard. Stormie had to say yes as she was so proud of all the kids’ talents; however she did make Ross stay with him. She could not break the buddy system rule. So while Ross and Ryland, the two youngest in the group, stayed back to continue partying, the rest of us started the long walk back to the Tipton Hotel. Rydel held my hand the entire way practically drilling Rocky with 20 questions. She seemed confused as to how Rocky had seen this coming when she hadn’t. In his defence, Rocky was a guy. Rydel and I may be best friends, but Rocky and I have a brotherly connection that is not easily explained.

We reached the hotel about 30 minutes later. Rocky and Riker looked beat and said goodnight as they headed off to our shared suite. Rydel being the girl of course always manages a room to herself so I decided to be the gentleman and walk her down the hall. As we got to her door she pulled a key card out of her clutch and turned towards me. “So are you going to take me out on an official date now?” I couldn’t tell if she wanted the answer to be a yes but since she hadn’t rejected me yet I went with the obvious answer. “How about I pick you up here tomorrow night at 5pm and we can go out to dinner and talk?” She quickly smiled at me nodding her head in approval. I smiled back and gave her a peck on the cheek. “Goodnight Rydel.” She fumbled with her key for a quick second and then managed to get the door open. As she walked into her room I could see her face turning red. “Goodnight Ellington,” She said as she closed the door.

Walking back to my room feeling on top of the world I began thinking about dinner tomorrow. Would she be interested in starting a relationship with me? I would be her first boyfriend. In reality, people have told us for years that we act like a couple all of the time. Maybe it wouldn’t change anything. As I reached my door a loud crash pulled me out of my thoughts. I looked down the hall panicking as I realized it was coming from Rydel’s room. I pounded on my door screaming for Riker and Rocky to come help me as I rush to Stormie and Mark’s room for their extra key card to Rydel’s suite. Mark answered the door dressed in his boxers and a white t-shirt looking a little disorganized. I had probably just woken him but I didn’t care. I needed to make sure Rydel was okay. I quickly explain what I had heard as Rocky and Riker came flying out of our room both also clearly having just crawled out of bed. “What the heck is going on Ratliff?” Rocky grumpily asked me. “I heard a loud crash come from Rydel’s room just as I was about to go into ours. We need to make sure she is okay.” I yelled back at Rocky. Mark came out with the card shouting “hey” as I stole it and ran down the hall. Riker and Rocky were right behind me as I burst into the room to find a pile of glass on the other side of the bed. I walked towards the pile and gasped. There on the floor was Rydel passed out with a giant gash in her forehead.
