Ryland
Marks Story Continues:
“Alright, so I don’t know how up to date you are in this story but to back track, those guys that I mentioned in the trial are the ones who captured Rydel. What I haven’t told the others is the reason why. Yes I do know why. See, after I discovered that they were working security at the New Years Bash, I followed the creepy guy who had been staring at Rydel. You can ask Riker the first part of that story. Anyway, following him led me to a clearing in the crowd where he met up with the other guys. They immediately began talking about this plan to kill the band members off one by one until one of them agreed to do what they asked; which after a bit more discussion ended up being to sing songs with one of their daughters to make her famous. While I was standing there listening I hadn’t noticed Rydel come up behind me. When she called for me I was so startled that I had knocked over a table standing beside them. The guys noticed and realized that I had been eaves dropping on their conversation.
Rydel hadn’t even realized the tension when she appeared beside me. Helping me up, she apologized and then was suddenly grabbed by the creepy guy. I fought to get her back but they wouldn’t let her go. They took her away and said she would be back in time for the show and then I was held down by the big guy until they were far enough away that I could not follow them. While we were there he basically told me that if I ever wanted to see my daughter again I could not interfere with any of their plans for the rest of the night.”
Dad started to get lower in his chair. He was so drained. Retelling this story obviously was not easy for him. “So I didn’t. She was brought back 3 minutes before the show which is why they couldn’t find her during final wardrobe check. When she came back she looked terrified. She whispered everything’s okay as she walked by me onto stage and then the show went on.” By this point in the story my Dad was literally in tears. He clearly felt guilty about what had happened. Dad had obviously decided that he was going to keep telling the whole story. It was like he had opened a full can of air that had been bursting to come out. I listened quietly soaking in everything he was saying.
“After the show, Rydel told me that they had tried to force her to sing with that girl. If she did not agree to this, they would cause something bad to happen. She told me she didn’t believe it and that they had given her 48 hours to decide what to do. Since we were planning on leaving the next day to New Jersey I guess she felt safe enough not to worry about it and spent the rest of the night as you know. Just after midnight one of them approached me and told me that I had better watch out because the first kill was coming up if she did not do as she was asked. I didn’t feel right about it so I followed him again and overheard them talking about the car crash that was supposed to kill the first band mate. They didn’t go much into detail but I gathered that they had planned to crash into one of the boys’ car if Rydel did not go through with the act.” I’m pretty sure he would have just done air quotes if his hands were free.
“Looking back now I see that they were talking about the end table injury that had happened to Rydel. I don’t know how that happened or what she was supposed to do but by the time I realized what was going on I had already let Ellington drive. So I did the only thing I could and got in the car when he was looking away and told Rydel to shush when she saw me. I saw the truck coming because one of the guys was at the corner crossing the road when it happened. I reacted instantly. Rydel saw the car and screamed just as I turned the wheel so Ellington hadn’t even realized what had happened when he was suddenly struck on the side by the big truck. At that point I had managed to force Rydel’s door open and unbuckle her seat belt and throw us both out of our doors. I felt awful for not helping Ellington but there was one of me and two of them. I could only do so much.”
Dad stopped to breathe for a minute before continuing. By now, I was so into the story that I had forgotten that Riker and Rocky were still outside the door. Dad was literally spilling the beans to those who should not be hearing them. “After that, things get a bit hazy. I know that the guy I saw on the road came over and grabbed Rydel. He shouted something at me about breaking my deal and then everything went black. I woke up a couple of hours later in a dark alley. The rest of the story you know. People had tried to call me, Rydel was missing, and Ellington was in the hospital. When I had eventually got the nerve to call that number, they told me that I would never see Rydel again. They granted me two minute updates everyday where I would get to hear her singing a song with the girl to prove she was still alive and that was it. For the last four months your mother and I have been calling it every day listening to her beautiful voice hoping to hear a hint of where they could be keeping her. They promised that as long as the band never knew what had happened to her they would be left alone.”
So that was why Mom and Dad had kept it a secret all this time. But what did I have to do with this. This horrible tale of deception, kidnapping, greed, and violence was like a series of unfortunate events that all lead to some dastardly plan; but what? “Dad, I am glad you told me the whole story. It makes so much more sense now, but I still don’t understand what I have to do with this phone call.” Dad looked up at me and gave a small smile. “You my son are the answer because you can make the phone calls and find a way to get her back. We haven’t been able to listen or trace the call or anything. They have people monitoring the other four everyday all day. If they were ever to make the call, the guys on the other end would know and one of you would be hurt. But Ryland, you are not monitored. They did not know you existed because they had never met you. They only know about the other four because of the band. If you could possibly make the call, pretend to be me, and find some way to track them down without getting caught, you would save everyone. That is why you’re the answer.”
I stood up and walked towards the back wall. This was too much. Not only had my sister been in the largest real life soap opera I have heard, but my entire family was in danger, and I had to save them. No pressure right? Oh boy!
