Rocky
**RING** “...oh, my head. What time is it? 6 A.M.! Who the hell is calling me this early? Ugh, where is my freaking phone? Hello?” My voice was hoarse from talking so much recently. I had spent the last two days dealing with officers and forensic people, providing DNA samples and other pictures. I was also the method of communication between my family and the NYPD. With a three hour time difference between California and New York, my family had been calling me all over the map. Riker kept calling me at 4 A.M. because he was trying to figure out how he could help that day. It was actually extremely annoying. “Good morning Rocky this is Officer Nichols. I apologize for the early wakeup call but I need you to come back to the station immediately. We have news on the car and have a few questions for you. Don’t worry about breakfast. I took the liberty of getting Officer Gage to pick you up some pancakes and a coffee. I expect to see you within the hour.” I sat up in bed brushing my hair with my fingers. “Okay, I guess I’ll be right there.”
I made it to the station just after 7 and walked back to Nichols’ office. “Ah Rocky, you made it. Here is your breakfast. Please have a seat while I go over what we have found.” “Well hang on should I conference call in my parents for this? My Dad wants me to keep him in the loop.” I reached to my back pocket for my phone when it was suddenly ripped out of my hand. “I would actually prefer it if this conversation did not leave this room Rocky. What I have to tell you is probably going to surprise you.” Well that doesn’t sound good. My family can’t hear about the case? What the hell is going on? “What do you mean Nichols? What are you not telling me?”
As he sat down in his chair he gestured for me to take a seat. I followed his lead and looked up waiting for him to begin. “Rocky, have you ever wondered why Rydel’s disappearance has not seemed to be the most pressing matter on your parent’s mind? Don’t you find it a little strange that the people searching for your sister are 5 young men between the ages of 17 and 22?” Funnily enough, I had considered this about a week after the accident. My mom was just too calm about the whole situation. Her baby girl, her only daughter had just disappeared and for some reason she was acting like Rydel had just gone on vacation. They did seem sad however, so I had just assumed they were thinking positively. “Well yeah, the thought had crossed my mind at one point. I had kind of decided it was their way of believing that Rydel was going to come home. I get the feeling that you don’t think that would be the case.”
“You are a very wise young man. Rocky something about this case has never made sense to me and I am wondering if you could answer a few questions for me. Why didn’t your Dad take Rydel to the hospital?” That was an easy one. I was there when Rydel had said no. “My sister had not wanted to go.” Officer Nichols looked right into my eyes. “Now think about this Rocky. She did not want to go to the hospital or she did want to go in the car with him?” What the hell kind of odd ass question was that? “To the hospital of course; Nichols spit out whatever it is you are hiding. Why are you asking all these questions about my Dad?” By this point, I had realized how badly my head was hurting. I opened the coffee on the desk hoping something warm would help.
“Rocky the test on the hand prints came back today. The ones you found on that seat. They were your father’s hands.” Immediately the coffee I had been drinking was spat all over Nichols desk. “WHAT! That has to be a mistake!” Nichols pulled some paper towels out of his drawer and began cleaning up the coffee. “I am afraid not Rocky. Believe me; I was confused at first as well until I started to realize things about this case that had not occurred to me at first. You all described your father as a very caring man who had always watched out for you. That does not strike me as a father who would allow his recently injured daughter out of his sight. Another thing that shocked me was that he was not the first on scene after the accident had occurred. I have been told that Riker Lynch, and yourself were the first on the scene as written in the reports that your brothers have been reading. My question to you then is why would a father with nothing to hide not show up immediately after his only daughter was in a car accident? Finally, why have your parents not been involved in any of the last few months of work? Can you answer any of those questions for me Mr. Lynch?”
My head was spinning. Officer Nichols was making some very serious allegations here towards my father but what made matters worse was that his reasoning made complete sense. “I have no idea... normally he would be involved in every little detail. But I honestly cannot answer any of your questions.” This was crazy! Could it be possible that my parents have had something to do with Rydels disappearance? Why the hell were my dad’s hand prints in the car? Why hasn’t he seemed to care as much as he obviously should? “Officer Nichols, would it be alright if I called my brother?” I may not be able to call my parents, but I could not do this alone. I could not investigate my own parents without the help of someone I trust. I needed Riker to come up here and fast! Nichols looked at me with a sad expression, “I think that would be wise. In fact you should get him to catch the next flight out. I will have Officer Gage book it immediately.”
