Rocky
“Ryland! Ryland! Wait!” Ryland had been talking with Dad for about 10 minutes when he had suddenly came flying out of the room. He flew past Riker and I like he had just won the lottery. Riker and I stared after him, looked at each other, looked at the door of the interview room, and then back at each other. As if someone had flipped a switch in both of our brains at the same time, we stood up and ran after Ryland. Where was he going? He said he had been having success getting through all of the drama involved with this case. Did that mean he had found something? Running after Ryland turned out to be a lot harder than I thought it would be. Why were him and Ross so fast! Riker and I were taller than both of them and yet here I was running harder than I had in a long time.
We ended up chasing the kid all the way out of the court house and down the steps only catching him as he tried to hail a cab. “Thought you were getting away huh little brother?” I yelled as I grabbed his left arm pulling him back to the stairs. He pulled away as he nervously laughed at my remark. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I was running to this cab to get it ready for you.” Riker sat down on the step beside Ryland looking like he was going to pass out. For a professional bass player he clearly needed to work on his sprinting air supply. “Listen kid, I don’t have time to deal with your sarcasm. Just tell me what you are hiding and why you ran from Riker and I when you knew we were waiting for your information.” Riker came up behind me grabbing my arm trying to calm me down. I will admit he had needed to do this a lot today. “Rocky relax bro. Let Ryland have a moment to catch his breath.” I looked over my shoulder at him laughing. “Ha-ha, Ryland or you? Alright I will sit here, you talk to him.”
“Very funny, anyway, Ryland what’s up? You obviously found something out. Do you want to talk about it?” Oh Riker and his brotherly love comments. Ryland looked between Riker and I before speaking. If you ask me he was thinking a little bit too hard for someone that was supposed to be talking to his brothers. “Yes I did find something. But I can’t tell you.” Seeing my reaction (which was to tackle him to the ground) Ryland quickly added “AT LEAST NOT YET! Look, I know what’s going on. Mom and Dad came clean and I know things about Rydel and the accident and why Dad was there. But you have to trust me! I have something I have to do before I can tell you, but I PROMISE I will tell you; all of you! I am not Dad; I could not keep this a secret for long. Just believe me when I tell you it is for your own good. Please Riker! Stop big brothering me for one second and trust that I can do this!”
For a DJ, Ryland had some mad soap opera skills. He made those simple few sentences sound like a poetry plea to the guy about to kill his sister’s dog’s best friend. I stood up beside Riker staring the kid down. He was being sincere. As the middle child in a big family, you get a sort of sixth sense about how your siblings are reacting in a situation. Ryland was surprisingly serious about his request. Before Riker could speak I decided that I was calm enough to take the lead on this. I had been in New York for 4 months alone. I knew more than anyone how important a mission of your own could be. Ryland had the look of determination and whatever he was going to do was important to him. “Alright Ry, I believe you.” Both he and Riker turned their heads in shock so quickly they could have gotten whiplash. “I’m sorry you what?” Riker asked me stunned. “I believe him. I know it’s not normal for me to give in, but I trust him. He has a plan Riker; I can see it in his eyes. But Ry I have a condition. You need to speak with Officer Nichols about your plan. He will be your support system if you really don’t want to tell us.”
Ryland took a minute to think this over before standing up and nodding. “Alright, I think that’s fair. However, I have a condition of my own as well. You, Riker, Ross, and Ellington cannot be here when I do. So I need you to hail a cab, call the other two, and go back to the hotel. I will return when I can tell you everything. I warn you though, it could be a couple of days and you CANNOT come looking for me.” Riker was just about to speak when I covered his mouth with one hand and shook Ryland’s hand with the other. “You little brother, have got yourself a deal. I will get these three out of here and you work your magic.” Ryland nodded and started heading up the stairs. Suddenly my hand was ripped off of Riker’s mouth and I watched as he ran up the stairs to stand in front of Ryland placing both of his hands on the kid’s shoulders. “Okay, I will go with Rocky, but I am your guardian at the moment. Can you at least promise to text me every day and night so that I know you are okay?” Ryland hugged Riker nodding his head. As he started walking up the stairs he turned back to us one more time. “Don’t worry guys. I got this.” For whatever reason, I really did believe him. As Riker stood there watching Ryland go back to find Officer Nichols, I pulled out my phone to call Ross. “Hey bro, you and Ellington need to come meet Riker and I out front of the courthouse steps. We will explain when you get here.”
