Truths Hide In Shadows

Chapter 28

The beasts of the Shadows were unimaginatively called Shadow Beasts. There are four categories that these Beasts can be born into. Dawn, Day, Dusk and Night. During these four times, the four  separate "kingdoms" are at their strongest. These Kingdoms are ruled by four Kings. The four Kings names being lost to time.

The Shadow Beasts hunted humans for their fear, anger and lust. These three emotions gave the Beasts energy while the humans' body and blood were their food source.

After thousands of years of being hunted, a small band of humans were able to fight back. These humans were odd and held the same system of power as the Beasts, but they could train to endure a time that isn't their own. They took "shifts" to try and kill or injure as many Beasts as possible.

Eventually several powerful Beasts that were able to take human form-known as the Great Ones- joined the humans side. Their reasons mainly being unknown.

When the Great Ones had joined the human's side, they had started to teach them magic. A power that was used only by powerful Beasts and their Kings. Many young souls were able to capture and hold these teachings and allowed it to aid the other's in their fights.

These young souls were called Mages.

After awhile, the Mages and Great Ones made an object that could trap the Beasts. However, the Mages added something to the item, to keep the it hidden and from having the Beasts that were still free finding it, it was allowed to change into a new item without ever letting the being inside out unless it was broken or opened. Though, the Great Ones made sure that it would always heal itself, that way, they would no longer need to fear the Beasts.

The only problem was that only two people could activate it, but the item only needs one of them. These people were in charge of keeping the item safe, naming them the Guardians.

During the preparations for the item, the four Kings were able to trick and manipulate many of the younger members. These members were the ones who had betrayed the organization, releasing the Kings when they were first trapped.

When it was clear they could escape, though, the four Kings had rushed to the opening, merging into one. Because of this, the now new King held only two dates of weakness, the eclipses.

Through the centuries the item has changed forms and hid with a Guardian before being passed on to another.

The last bearer though, was trapped and killed, not before they used magic to hid the item. They told both the Organization and the Beasts a riddle, a riddle on how to not only find the item, but the new Guardian as well.

Both sides are looking for the item, as without it, the Guardian can't do their sacred duty... And the world may never be truly safe.
