Jenna
"Sure you wanna stay on campus?" Mona asks, watching wide eyed as I slip on a knee length skirt and a white T-shirt. The white shirt has definitely grown on me. It has the inscription "Team spirit" on it, and I had gotten it back in High school, when my math team had won the national math competition.
"Anything to get away from you and your mother" I mutter, styling my hair into a ponytail and putting on a pair of eyeglass
"You look like a nerd"
"I'm a nerd" I reply sharply, shoving my sister out of my way. I slip on a pair of sandals that blend perfectly with my skirt and pack up my suitcase. I couldn't be more ready for school. I'd been living off campus since my freshman year, but I realized I'd had enough of my family at the start of junior year.
"You don't have to shove everyone out of your life. I'm your sister" Well, thank you captain obvious.
"Do me a favour and make me a sandwich Mona" I reply nonchalantly, applying a little perfume.
"Dad's home. Do you even know that? He wants to..."
"I don't care about dad, Mona" I reply flatly, placing a palm on her shoulder "I care about sandwiches. Please make me a sandwich" I watch as her knuckles turn white, and her eyes fill up with tears. Talk about emotional.
"You're damaged Jenn. You need..you need to find love!!" I burst into laughter. Love? Gag me.
"You can't find love, Mona. It's fictional. You think mom loves you, and then she dies" my eyes begin to water too, and my voice hitches, but I have to go on. I have to let my sister know how this world fucking works. "Every day, when we were younger, I'd go to mom's sick bed, and beg her to not die on me. To not die on us. Guess how that turned out. And what about dad? You think he loves you, but then he doesn't even show up on the burial of your mother. Rather, he brings in a substitute mother. Probably to wipe off our memory of the old one. Well that only worked on you, Mona" My last sentence finally breaks her, and I watch as her feet tremble beneath her.
"Who are you? Are you my sister? Are you Jenna? I'm not fucking sure anymore!!" she screams, racing out of my room, and leaving me all alone to sulk in my misery. I let out a strangled laugh, because there's no better way to express my pain. I really am broken.
