The Only Exception

"Anyone who tries to get close, will get a bomb to the face," Varian said, as he opened his satchel to reveal brightly colored test tubes.

Heavy footsteps were heard from afar. Getting closer and closer each second.

"Varian!"

He saw you in the distance, running at him at an incredible fast speed. As soon, as you were close to him you engulfed him in a hug. Varian wrapped his free hand around you to hug back, as his other hand held his satchel open.

"Anyone else that tries to get close to me will have a bomb to the face," he said with the same snarl, he had at the beginning. He focused the sentence to the people in front of him. Letting them know that even though you were hugging him, he still won't hesitate to blow their faces off.

He felt you snuggle closer. "I can't believe you're back! I haven't seen you in so long!"

Varian had gone on a trip to discover new elements, past the border of Old Corona. Apparently the land he traveled in was pirate and thief infested.

When Rapunzel, Eugene, Cassandra tried to hug him. He backed up, putting his hand between him and them.

Eugene spoke up, "Hey Varian, it's just us." He went to pat Varian on the shoulder, letting out a frown when the boy in question straightened up.

Trading worried glances towards each other, Rapunzel said, "Varian, calm down. You're in Corona now."

That fact didn't calm Varian down, he just hugged you tightly. The three sighed, knowing that Varian wasn't in the right mindset to talk to. They started to walk back to the castle.

You let go of Varian. You were about to walk away with Rapunzel, Cassandra, and Eugene, but Varian's grip didn't budge.

"Varian-" you started to say.

"I missed you, (Y/N)." It came out as a mutter.

You let out a chuckle, grabbing his hand and intertwining your hand with his. "Come on, you dork."

You heard a crash.

"What the fuck, Rapunzel!"

Running to Varian's lab, you get to the door. Opening it to see, Varian's chemicals all spilled on the floor. Rapunzel was repeatedly apologizing, waving her hands around as she tried to explain.

You saw Varian, who was taking deep breathes. As rubbed him temples, trying to calm himself down. He didn't want to snap at Rapunzel again.

Making your way up to him, you wrap your hands around his waist. He tensed. When he realized it was you, Varian relaxed. You rest your chin on his shoulder. Whispering, "It's okay, Varian. I'm here. Don't worry."

He slugged deeper into your hold. Rapunzel took this as a chance to leave, you give her a sympathetic smile. She mouthed a, "It's okay. Sorry about the mess." Taking a glance at the spilled chemicals, as she left.

You pulled Varian to the couch. Resting his head on your lap, as you cascaded your hand in his hair. Once, he fell asleep you cleaned up the mess.

In the morning, you had training with Cassandra. You wanted her to train you, just in case you would ever be in a dangerous situation. You left Varian breakfast and a note saying you'd be out with Cassandra.

"You have to hit harder than that, (Y/N)!" Blocking your hit with her sword, Cassandra managed to push you. Flying you a few feet away.

You got up, trying to lay a blow on Cassandra. Only leading her to dodge it, using the hilt of her sword to punch you in the stomach. Doubling back, you land on the floor.
