"Don't worry about me. I'm sure, I can find another assistant in the... next five minutes," Varian said. His head dropping down, as he pulled back the curtain and walked away.
You took this as a sign to step in, "Heard you needed an assistant. Well you're in luck buddy boy, because (Y/N)'s here to help!"
Varian turned his head away from the crowd to look at you. You were standing proudly with a big smile on your face. Man, was he lucky to have you as a friend.
Breaking the silence, you asked "So, what do you need me to do?"
***
"Next!"
Varian looked down at the ground, feeling defeated. All his work and for nothing! All of it thrown away, just because the ladder, he put aside made some old drunkard trip, hit a guard, and then almost kill the judge. He was about to walk away, until he heard you shout.
"Now hang on, just a minute! You're kidding me right?! Sure, you almost got killed, but are you joking right now?! He just created an entirely new element and you buffoons just pass it of as if it's nothing! You call yourself a scientist, but you're all just blind! I can bet anything you can do, Varian can do ten times, no, twenty times better! You are a-," you couldn't finish your sentence, because you were ushered away by Cassandra. Screaming profanities as you were pushed off the stage.
You huffed, grabbing Varian by the hand and his machine. As you walked away, you spared one last look at Cassandra. You saw her look solemnly at Varian, until she looked at you. She turned away when she saw the glare you threw her.
You let go of Varian's hand, as he went to sit down by a fountain. You sat down beside him, as he started to say, "You know you didn't have to do that. It wasn't worth it anyways, it was a failed project to begin with. I was just being dumb," your heart broke with each word he said. Did he really think so little of himself?
"Varian," You put your hand on his shoulder, getting his attention. "You aren't dumb, far from it actually. That judge was being the dumb one, passing off your invention like it's insignificant as a wardrobe."
Those blue eyes wrinkled as you saw him smile, "Thank you, (Y/N). I don't know what I'd do without you."
Letting out a small laugh, you ruffled his hair saying, "I'm always gonna be here for you, Varian."
There was a comfortable silence, until you began to speak up again.
"The-, uhm, the element did you really name it after Cassandra? I mean, you know you could have asked me in the first place, right? I would've helped you in a heartbeat, but-, I mean, uhm, she did bail on you for guard duty," You said with a little jealousy and snide peaking through the words. You tried not to make it sound like you were jealous, you really did try.
You looked at Varian as his cheeks began to heat up, turning an adorable shade of pink. It shows off all his pretty freckles, you thought.
"Y-yeah, I did. But I'm thinking of changing it."
"Oh yeah? To what?" You meant it sarcastically, but your curiosity got the best of you.
"I'm thinking of naming it after you," those pink freckled cheeks now flaring with red.
"Oh, why?" You were genuinely curious, why was he naming it after you? Did he like you, like you liked him?
Blue eyes made contact with yours, he let out a breathy chuckle. "Because, your my best friend, and after what you did on that stage for me, you deserve something."
You smiled, but inside you were overthinking. Friend? Is that what he still thinks of me? As a friend?

CLANK
The food you brought for Varian, dropped to the floor as you looked at the sight before you.
There stood Varian's father encased in an orange stone. You moved quick on your feet to try to break him free. Grabbing a hammer from Varian's desk, you took a hard swing at the stone. It remain the way it was, not a scratch. You tried again and again. Harder hits each time you swung the hammer. Giving up on the hammer, you looked around the room. Your eyes caught sight of a scrap of sharp metal, taking a hold of it you began to hit the stone again.
The metal stinging your hands, giving you red blooded marks. You kept trying though, you knew Varian needed his father, that he was the only person Varian had in his family, after his mother left. As your thoughts of how Varian needed his father flooded your head, you hit harder and harder.
You were a heaving mess of blooded hands and sweat. You heard a door slam open, turning your head you saw Varian.
"Varian! Oh god! I'm so sorry! It's all-"
He panicked, just by your expression and the situation at hand, Varian said, "(Y/N), what's wrong? Are y-" he cut himself of when he grabbed your hands and saw the cuts on the palms, "What happened!? Are you okay? What-" Looking up from you, he saw the stone that surrounded his dad behind you. "Dad?!"
Varian said it in a quiet whisper, it was heartbreaking to hear. To see him fall to his knees, hearing his sobs as he banged on the unbreakable stone.
"Varian, I'm so sorry. It's all my fault, if I would have come here earlier maybe I could have done something. Maybe if I was stronger, I'd be able to break it. It's all my fault, Varian, I'm so sorry," you were beginning to tear up too. Seeing Varian like this, and not having the power to fix it, to make him feel better, felt awful. He deserves to be happy, to feel like a kid again, most importantly, he deserves to have his dad back.
Varian straightened up, wiping his tears away. " Don't blame yourself, I know you tried your best." He turned around looking at you with his ocean blue eyes. "It's not your fault, (Y/N). It's Her fault."
That sent a chill up your spine, the air around you two turned colder, darker almost. Even Ruddiger stepped back a little, hidden under a chair.
"Varian, I don't understand. Who's-"
He cut you off, sharply saying, "Rapunzel's."
"Varian, that's ridiculous. How can-"
He hugged you, silencing your words with his chest. "(Y/N), I love you." You looked up at him, as he continued, "I've been blinded this whole time, you were always their for me, no matter what happened, you were there. Others just break their promises, don't even give me a second glance. But, you have always been by my side, through thick and thin. We're going to make my dad proud and we're going to get him out. No matter what." He tightened his grip on you, and then grabbed your cheeks. Tilling your head to look at him.
"I love you, (Y/N)."
"Varian," he then leaned in to kiss you, accepting the kiss quickly you rolled your head and moved your lips against his. Pulling apart, saying, "I love you too."
He put his forehead against yours, smiling. "Let's get your hand bandaged up. Shall we, milady?"
He lead you out of the room to wrap your hands up.
Little did you know, his thoughts were flooded with revenge and spite. Thoughts of plans to get back at Rapunzel for broken promises, all while you were at the center of the cyclone of ideas in his head. Nothing would come to harm you, he was going to make sure of it. And no one, will take you away from him. Or they'll have hell to pay. He promised himself that, and he was sure that it would be the only promise in his life that wouldn't be broken.
