[Author's Note: listen, the royal alchemist varian au is amazing, so this is that but with a little surprise; there's gonna be a part two]

Footsteps were heard from outside Varian's lab. They came closer and closer, until the door slammed open.

"Varian! We need your help!" Rapunzel sprinted into the room. The princess slightly out of breath from all the running.

Putting down the vile, he was holding. Varian asked, "What's wrong, Rapunzel?"

Catching her breath, Rapunzel leaned on a table. "The ballroom-" she paused to take a breath, "it needs to be cleaned by tomorrow. The castle staff is all booked with the foods and decorations. We thought that the royal alchemist might have a solution for cleaning the ballroom quickly."

As Rapunzel was talking, Varian gathered the things he needed. Putting them into his satchel, "Alright, I think I have everything I need."

Nodding, the princess made her way out of the lab. Varian following right behind her. "I honestly don't know what we would do without your help, Varian."

He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. Varian waved her off, saying, "Aww shucks. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't even be here. I owe you, Rapunzel."

She nudges him lightly, messing him his hair. Varian chuckles, as Rapunzel opens the door to the ballroom.

"Yikes," the ballroom floor was covered in dirt. White marble couldn't be seen, dust bunnies running around the floor in every direction.

Turning to Rapunzel, Varian sends her a confused look.

Not needing to ask, Rapunzel answered his confusion. "Well, I tried to bring the grass inside. In my defense, I didn't know it was gonna get this dirty!" She shrugged.

Cassandra, was seen with a mop. Trying desperately to rub the dirt off. "Hey, Varian how about you do your magic and help us clean this floor already!"

As he went through his satchel, "It's alchemy, not magic." Getting a green colored vile out, he spilled it on the floor. The chemical reaction cleaned the floor, making it shine in a matter of seconds.

Walking in the room, Eugene slipped, his fall making a loud bang. "Good job with the floor, guys! I can see myself in it!"

Cassandra rolled her eyes, as Rapunzel came to help Eugene up.

"This all for the Welcoming Ball to the neighboring kingdom?" Eugene asked. Rubbing and shaking his head, because of the fall.

Tilting his head confusedly, Varian spoke up. "Welcoming Ball? Why are we throwing a ball?"

"It's for the Princess. She just turned 18, the king thought it would be nice, if they threw a party for her. You know, in thanks for their alliance with our kingdom." Cassandra answered.

"Yeah! And who knows? Maybe, you might even get to meet her! You two are the same age! Something could happen tonight!" Rapunzel excitedly added. She's been wanting to set the princess and Varian together for weeks, both not having any time for dating and such.

Cassandra let out a snort, laughing slightly. "Like, Casanova here has any charm to sweep a girl off her feet." She put a hand on Varian's shoulder, "Listen, I'm not trying to be mean, but you have zero to none moves. You're just bad as Eugene."

"She's right, Varian. You are as bad as me- wait hang on! I have moves! I have style! Just watch!" Eugene threw them a smolder.

"Yeah, that's so charming." Cassandra sarcastically replied.

"Eugene, maybe you could teach Varian. Give him some pointers and all that. Cassandra and I will help set up the decorations." Rapunzel nodded to Cassandra. Making their way to the doors.

Cassandra looked in confusion at Rapunzel. Her eyes then widened, when Rapunzel sent her a look. They seemed to be having a conversation with their eyes.

Nodding along, they made their way out. Closing the doors of the ballroom quickly, leaving Varian to Eugene.

"Did you notice how they just walked out? When they're supposed to be setting the decorations in here," Varian asked.

Waving him off, Eugene said, "It's probably nothing. Back to you, if you style your hair as so-"

Varian rolled his eyes, spacing out. He was going to have to listen to Eugene talk, for who know how long.

"Ah! Rapunzel does the dress really have to be so tight?" You felt like you were about to faint. The corset Rapunzel had you wear suffocating your waist.

You looked at Cassandra, who was holding her laughter in. "Oh, shut up, Cassandra!" You rolled your eyes, "Anyways, Rapunzel who's this guy you were telling me about?"

Rapunzel ties your corset, stepping back to take a look out you. "The guy's name is Varian. He's our kingdom's-"

Cassandra cuts her off, "Nerd!"

"Cassandra!" Rapunzel says. "He is not a nerd. He's our kingdom's alchemist. I remember the letters you wrote me about how you wanted to learn alchemy. But, you never had time. Princess duties and all that, right?"

You nod, "So, you think he's the one, because we both have the same interest?"

"Not just that! You guys seem to be perfect for each other!" She exclaims. Looking for another dress to put you in.

"They haven't met each other yet, Raps. We don't know if they'll even like each other." Cassandra says, sharping a sword.

She waves Cassandra off, "I know it in my heart! All you guys have to do is meet each other!"

"Rapunzel, you are such a hopeless romantic." You shake your head. Lifting your arms as she puts a dress on you.

Cassandra gives out a tired sigh, launching herself on the bed. "She is. A very hopeless one."

Rapunzel just waved her off. Turning you to look at her, so she could see your dress.

Later that night, at the ball, was one of the most awkward things you have ever experienced. The corset was too tight, the people of Corona were nice, but they treated you way too formally. People at your kingdom treat you the same as any, and you liked that. No one wanted to feel like they were given special treatment, because of a crown.

You went outside, the air in the gardens helping you relax.

"Hey, princess."

Turning around, you see a boy your age. Freckles lining his cheeks, a blue streak that contrasted greatly with the rest of his dark hair.

"Please, no formalities. (Y/N), is just fine," you reply tiredly to the boy. You've been saying that to everyone, that calls you princess. You felt like a record stuck on repeat, that no one was listening to.

The boy sits besides you, "Well, (Y/N). I'm Varian, it's nice to finally meet you. You know, without the formal introduction and the swarming of people around you."

Groaning, you put your head in your hands. "Don't remind me. I know Rapunzel means well, but this whole ball was something that I did not need."

Varian stands up, giving you his hand. "What are you doing," you ask, looking up at him.

He just shrugs, "I thought that maybe, you wanted to dance. I don't think you got your first ball dance yet. You probably don't want to go back inside and dance, either. Plus, it's nice out."

Varian bows, "So, princess. Wanna dance?"
