"Why do we have to go to a school for geniuses?" I whine.
"Umm, maybe because we are geniuses?" Tessa reply.
"You, maybe. Me, no."
"What do you mean, maybe? I am a genius." Tessa teases.
"Sure... keep telling yourself that," I say sarcastically.
"Hey!"
"Kidding."
Okay, I should probably start from the beginning. Um, my name is Emma West. I live in Queens, New York. I'm going to a high school for genius kids and I'm a junior so... life's been rough, trying to squeeze in all the high school credits I need for college. Fun. But, lucky me! Life was about to get a lot worse. Whoop-de-do. The day started out as what any high schooler would think of as a normal day. I had woken up late and had to run to school in order to get there in time. I fell asleep in homeroom, got a test back, which I had failed, and was starving because I didn't get to eat breakfast. Just another normal day. I walked into AP chemistry and sat down in my seat. Immediately, I wanted to put my head on my desk. Ugh, I feel so groggy today. Everything feels stuffy. I thought as I pulled out my notebook. More kids filled in as I read the board.

"Yes, the one thing I know I did right," I whispered to myself as I pulled the sheet of notes out of my backpack. I watched as Mr. Top walked in and surveyed the room. Then he walked up to the board. "I hope everyone had a good weekend and finished the homework, right?" He said looking around expectantly. Kids started to hurriedly finish whatever they hadn't done. Mr. Top nods. "That's what I thought. Mr. Parker, can you please go around and pick up everyone's work?" I looked across the table next to me, where Peter Parker sat. He was a quiet kid who didn't talk too much. He had hazel eyes and light brown hair. He was pretty tall but he always slouched which had made him look smaller. I watched as he nodded, stood up, and quietly started to collect everyone's work.
"Well, since only a few of you decided to actually do your work, you all get to try out the new team project I created over the weekend." Mr. Top said. Everyone groaned, complaining about how they had been busy over the weekend. Of course, he would do a team project. Not just a project, a team one! I think, annoyed. "And I'm choosing the teams!" He said, practically grinning with the satisfaction of our misery.
Oh, joy. I thought. I could see the gears turning in Mr. Top's head as he tried to decide the best/worst people to partner up with. "Let's see..." He started. I look over at my best friend Tessa and pray that he'll partner us up. But I knew Mr. Top all too well to hope for that. If anything, he would put Tessa with the most annoying kid in class. So I just distractedly listen as he called out partners.
"Mr. Parker and... oh, Ms. West!" Top said, bringing me back to reality. Oh no. Ugh.
"Ms. Miller and Mr. Green." Great. Now she's stuck with that jerk. I looked at her, only to see her give Jack a small smile and look down at her hands. They're back together because she claims she's 'forgiven him' for cheating on her, but I know her better than that. He has something on her. I turn to survey my new partner and see that he's glaring at Jack. Hey, we have one thing in common. Our hatred for Jack.
"You don't like him, too?" I asked, nodding towards Jack.
Peter jumps. "Um, yeah. You could say that." He mumbled.
"Ooookay, cause that wasn't cryptic at all..."
"Sorry, it's just kind of private."
"Oh, okay." I rolled my eyes as Mr. Top explained what our project was about.
"You will all have to choose one element from the periodic table and make a detailed presentation about it." He starts passing out the project template.
I quickly slipped out my phone and shoot a text to Tessa.
Hey, sorry that you're partnered up with the jerk. I texted.
He's not a jerk, he's my boyfriend. She replied.
Well then, he needs to start acting like the latter instead of the former.
See? Those big words mean you are a genius.
Nice subject change.
Thank you. I've been told I have a way with words.
That's a lie.
Yes, yes it is. Tessa and I looked at each other and laugh.
"Ms. Miller?" Tessa looked up. Mr. Top was standing right in front of her.
"Yes, sir?" She said
"I'm going to have to ask you to put the phone away."
"Sorry, sir." I looked over at her. Sorry. I mouthed to her.
"You too, Ms. West." My head snapped up, and I turned scarlet.
"Sorry," I said putting my phone away. I looked at Peter. He had already started looking stuff up on the laptop we were sharing for the project.
