When chemistry finally ended, I walked out feeling like the stupidest person ever. The whole time I had been so behind. I stayed up late last night texting Jack, so I was exhausted. I couldn't tell Emma that, though, because she would just lecture me on why I needed to dump Jack. I walk over to Emma's desk, where she and Peter are arguing over the font type for the project. I roll my eyes. Of course, she had found a way to argue with her new partner within the first 40 minutes of working with him.
"Emma, let's go. Time for lunch."
"Oh, yeah. Sorry, it's just someone is being difficult." She says, glaring at Peter.
"Sorry you have to put up with her," I say.
"You're the one I'm sorry for. You have to put up with her all the time." He says, rolling his eyes. I laugh.
"I know, right? One of these days I'm gonna ditch her and find a nice friend."
"Hey!" Emma said, wounded.
"I'm just kidding. I wouldn't trade you for anyone. Unless it was Shawn Mendes. Then you're out of luck."
"I don't blame you. I would do the same."
"I know," I reply. Peter glances at us. "Sorry, we're weird."
"No, it's good. I was just wondering when we could get together for the project?" He says, turning to Emma.
"Umm, how about your house at 7 tonight?" Emma asks.
"Yeah, ok." Peter grabs his notebook and walks away.
"Emma, you must have ticked him off real good. He ran away like he was afraid you were going to follow him and keep telling him off."
"Telling him off?"
"Sorry, I was reading Harry Potter last night."
"Makes sense."
"Yeah." There's a short pause as Emma stared at the screen of her laptop, read something, then made a quick note. "Soo, how's the project going?"
"Good. How about yours?" Emma mumbles.
"Good. Jack is figuring out what element we should pick." I say, fiddling with a sticker on the table.
"Oh cool..." She said distractedly.
"Okay, someone isn't paying attention." I sigh.
"Sorry, I just hate group projects."
"I know. They really suck. But at least you got a good partner."
"Really? A good partner? He's so awkward."
"Hey, so you guys have something in common!" I say sarcastically
"I am not as bad as he is." She says, scowling at me.
"Okay, well, have fun," I say as I wander back over to Jack.
Jack Green looks like a super dumb stereotypical jock, but there was a reason he had gotten a scholarship to Midtown School of Science and Technology. He is super smart and had already been accepted to a promising college. I just wish he was a little more relationship smart than book smart sometimes. I mean, I love him, and he loves me, he just doesn't always make that clear.
"Jack, let's go get lunch."
"We're doing lunch today?"
"Yes, we talked about this last week."
"Sorry babe, I forgot. We have football practice today."
"Y-you do?" I ask. I cleared this with you a week ago for a reason.
"Yeah, sorry. Emergency practice. You understand, right?"
"Of course, Jack." Of course, I understand. He needs to get a football scholarship for the college he'd been accepted in. College leads to the rest of our life. College is so much bigger than high school. So much bigger than us.
"Bye." He kisses my cheek. "See you in 5th."
"See you in 5th," I reply. He leaves, and I sit down. I probably made him feel terrible. I'm his girlfriend, it's my job to make him feel happy. I can feel a tear dripping down my face. Footsteps behind me interrupted my thoughts. I quickly wipe away the tears and turn around to see Emma's partner, Peter Parker, staring at me.
"Sorry, left my binder."
"No, it's fine." I laugh as I pick up my stuff. "Ignore me, I'm a mess."
"No, it's fine. It sucks when plans change." He turns red.
"Umm, ok. How much of that whole conversation did you hear?"
"Um, uh, ok, this looks really bad but-" I cut him off.
"I'm going to go now. I have homework to catch up on."
"O-okay. Bye."
"Bye." I speed towards the library. It's a good thing Jack has practice. I need to keep my grades up, right?
"Tessa? I thought you and Jack were eating together." Shoot. Emma. I turn around.
"Yeah, no. He had an emergency practice."
"Again?"
"Yeah, the tournament is coming up."
"Well, do you want to eat with us?"
I don't want to eat at all. "No, that's ok. I need to study."
She looks at me. "If you're sure..."
I nod. "I am."Word Count //749 Words\\
