I walk down the halls, ignoring the after school club noise. Decathlon practice ended early, and I need to go shopping for May. We're out of milk. I walk out to the bus stop. Please say I'm not late. I think. But when I look at my phone, I noticed that the bus was set to stop 10 minutes ago. Yep, I'm late.
"Hey, need a lift?" I turn and see my partner for the Chemistry project, Emma, glaring at a petite girl with platinum blond hair, who's waving me over. I think her name was Tessa.
"Seriously?" I'm doubting the offer.
"Yeah, of course!" Tessa smiles. I see Emma turn and glare at her.
"...you don't even have a license!"
"Yeah, but I have a car, and you have a license. It works! And, it gives you an opportunity to get to know him." I hear as I run over.
"Come on, hurry. We're late." Emma runs over to a small red car. Tessa tosses her the keys, and Emma opens the driver's side door. By the time I get over there, they're both in the car and Tessa has her earbuds in. I climb in the back.
"So, whose car is this?"
"Tessa's," Emma replies.
"Why isn't she driving?"
"She doesn't have her license."
"Why?"
"She hates driving, being driven, and cars in general. That's why her earbuds are in. She's listening to her relaxing playlist."
"So, she never learned?"
"Nope."
"How do you get places?"
"We walk."
"Oh. What are you guys late for?" I ask
"My brother works two part-time jobs for college, so I barely see him. This is his break time."
"Oh, where does he work?"
"In the morning at a diner, evening the grocery store on 5th Avenue."
"Wait, where is he now?"
"What?"
"Like what job?"
"Oh, he's going to 5th Avenue. He has about 20 minutes in between so I go and see him after basketball." Even though I couldn't see her, I knew that she wished she could see him more.
"Why don't your parents pay for his college?"
"Um... well I..." She starts but stops, choking on her words. Then all of a sudden she jerks to a stop. "Dude! I'm driving here!" She yells as a car speeds by. Tessa pulls out her earbuds and gasps.
"See? This is why I don't drive." She says, eyes wide as she turns to me. "I'm so sorry, she's an angry driver." She says as Emma mutters angrily about how bad people drive.
"It's okay, my Aunt May is, too. I'm used to it." For the rest of the car ride, we drive in silence till we pull up to the 5th Ave. grocery store.
"Emma, you do realize we were supposed to bring Peter home, right?" Tessa asks
"Oh no, it's okay. I actually needed to get some groceries before I went home." I say quickly.
"See, we're fine, now come on!" Emma says, reassuring her as she gets out of the car.
