That day continued like the next two. I remained quiet, not speaking unless spoken to. Keeping to myself mostly.
I saw Max every now and then, often on his own. I always had the urge to talk to him, I just or he just, never had the time.
Will and Jed had tested me with many jobs.
I tried to be a Stem Grower. Stem Growers ran control of the crops. I spent four hours continuously planting and pulling plants. My back ached from being hunched over plants for hours. It wasn't long before I realized that I couldn't manage the crops well, so I didn't get the job. I also couldn't stand the beaming sun's rays. There was no shade in fields.
Then I watched the Med-Stops. Those were the people whom medically cared for everyone. Med-Stops worked in a small, metal building. Their were beds lining the walls and trunks full of medications in the corners. Max was always busy, so he was never there.
Med-Stops made use of the medicines given to them by the Outsiders. I couldn't tell something so simple as a heart rate, therefore, not a Med-Stop.
It wasn't long until Will had me spend some time with the Bloods; they spent their days taking care of any animals they found in the trees for food. I couldn't manage gutting animals; the blood and the smell of decay was too overwhelming. So, no job.
The most recent job I tried was with the Seekers. Seekers had the hardest job. They spent their entire day seeking Survival for any changes. Seekers had to spend their days running with a notepad and a pen. The constantly wrote and drew the slightest of changes. Seeking was something I was good at, it was the job I liked the most.
I was exhausted but willing to work. Anything to keep my mind off of the things that felt familiar. I was afraid that more things had become to feel familiar. Things, directions... people.
The sight of Max drew every bit of my attention to him. His movement felt familiar, his eyes, his hair... him.
When ever I had free time, I spent it with Faye. We often played games. I like to be around her. She sent a feeling of being secure. Faye had quickly become someone I could call a friend.
However, the constant kindness was washed away when it came time for sleep.
Every night I had dreams of a forgotten life:
"Jordyn. They're coming. Hide," says a familiar voice. A male voice. I'm in a small house surrounded by trees. Someone grabs my wrist, I look to see who but there is no body. It's as if the hands were floating.
"Follow me Jordyn. I'll take you some where safe," the voice says again. I follow the hands through tall trees.
"What about you? Where will you go?" I feel myself ask.
I feel fear in my chest as I follow the hands. I arrive to a trapped door hidden under leaves. The hands open the door and wave me to go in.
"Jordyn. I'll be okay as long as you're safe," says the voice.
Before I know it, I'm underground. I hear the male voice scream with fear. I go back through the door. Back into the trees. I look around panicked. There's a booming sound, then it's black.
My eyes shot open. I took panicked breaths. I sat up in my hammock, almost rolling over. I gasped, placing a hand on my chest.
I jumped when I heard the sirens go off, I knew it was time for all of us to wake up. "Lucky" for me, I was already awake. I put my clip-on backpack on and pulled my hair up with string.
My nightmare pulsed through my thoughts. I was too weak to fight the thoughts, so I ignored them instead. I rubbed my blood shot eyes as I began walking to Jed's cabin as the Planks began opening.
